Join a nationally-known, non-profit law organization and help people access Medicare and health care.
The Center for Medicare Advocacy (the Center) seeks a Finance and Benefits Director with a commitment to health equity and social justice in its Mansfield, CT office, with some remote work possible. This individual will be responsible for managing all aspects of financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting. They will also be responsible for benefit administration and will serve as liaison with the Center’s Human Resource consultants and internal Leadership Team.
The Center is a private, non-profit, public interest law organization that works to advance access to comprehensive Medicare, quality health care, and health equity for older people and people with disabilities. The Center focuses on the needs of people with long-term and chronic conditions. The organization’s work includes individual advocacy, administrative appeals, education, legislative and regulatory analysis, policy initiatives, and litigation of importance to Medicare beneficiaries nationwide. Headquartered in Mansfield, Connecticut and Washington, DC, the Center also has attorneys in CA, MA, MD, and WI. This position is based in our flagship office in Connecticut, with some remote work possible.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Finance
- Direct and assume responsibility for the Center’s accounting practices and maintain accurate financial records, preparing timely financial reports using generally accepted accounting principles.
- Hands-on responsibilities for all aspects of the financial operations, including AR, AP, bank reconciliations, and cash management.
- Prepare bi-weekly payroll.
- Manage the annual budget process.
- Prepare analysis of financial statements, variance and cash flow and other reports as requested by Co-Directors and Board of Directors.
- Present financials and variance analysis at Board of Directors meetings.
- Prepare grant budgets and financial reports for government, public, and private funders.
- Serve as primary liaison with the Center’s vendors, regularly reviewing and helping to negotiate contracts and agreements.
- Organize and lead annual auditing process. Serve as liaison with outside auditor, provide all year end schedules and documents requested by auditor.
- Review draft audited financial statements and draft Form 990 to ensure accuracy prior to finalization and timely submission by outside auditor.
- Prepare all State of Connecticut required attorney tax returns and Client Security Fund filings.
- Prepare all annual state required reporting for CA, CT, and DC along with other states as needed.
- Prepare required filings and reports for CT.
- Reconcile donations with development database.
- Serve as liaison with insurance broker for the Center’s insurance policies.
- Serve as liaison with investment advisor for the Center’s investment accounts.
- Assist staff with registration for conferences, trainings, and other programs as requested.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
REQUIREMENTS
The Center’s CT office, located in Mansfield, CT, is 15 minutes from the University of Connecticut, 40 minutes from Hartford, 1½ hours from Boston, and 2½ hours from New York City.
Depending on experience, starting annual salary of $90,000 to $110,000. Excellent benefit package.
