Job Summary
The laboratory technician supports the Physical Science department by obtaining, organizing, preparing, setting up, and maintaining laboratory materials. The Physical Science department includes the subject areas of Astronomy, Geology, and Physics. The technician is responsible for ensuring all materials are in good repair and appropriately provided on time to the instructors. The technician receives and maintains supplies and equipment, as well as establishes and maintains equipment maintenance and inventory records. The technician adheres to and ensures compliance with applicable policies and procedures.
Additional Information
Positions in this class typically require : climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Medium Work : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body.
Working Conditions : Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gasses, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood or other body fluids); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or threatening environment); and moderate exposure to extreme temperatures or intense noise.
Essential Functions
30% - Supports laboratory programs and initiates lab set-ups and take-downs for physics, astronomy, geology, and physical science courses through coordination with appropriate faculty.
30% - Maintains, stores, and inventories supplies and equipment, including the development and update of lab setup sheets.
15% - Performs routine cleaning of labs & supplies as necessary.
10% - Analyzes requirements for supplies and initiates the purchase of equipment.
10% - Provides work direction to students or temporary workers.
5% - Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and one year of laboratory experience such as maintaining equipment, facility space, supplies, or other resources used for laboratory purposes in the area of assignment.
An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above, sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job, such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.
Desired Qualifications
A. One year or more of experience preparing college-level laboratories
B. Prior coursework in astronomy, geology and / or physics.
Coursework must be provided with application by providing unofficial transcripts.
C. Experience working with supervisor and other staff members to coordinate efforts, including follow through on assigned tasks to ensure that critical deadlines are met
D. Experience with inventory support, such as monitoring, purchasing, and receiving of lab supplies.
Excellent written communication skills as evidenced in a cover letter and / or resume.
F. Two (2) years or more using Microsoft Office and / or the Google Suite working with documents and spreadsheets.
Special Working Conditions
Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D driver's license is required; must meet minimum standards regarding driving : http : / / www.maricopa.edu / legal / rmi / vehicle.htm#requirements
