Job Summary
This position begins in August, 2026
Location : Southern and Dobson & Red Mountain Campus
Mesa Community College seeks two dynamic and passionate faculty members to teach general biology for majors at our Southern and Dobson, and Red Mountain campuses, with the flexibility and expertise to also teach anatomy & physiology. We are looking for an innovative and creative science educator dedicated to empowering a diverse and often underprepared community college student population through engaging and inclusive teaching practices for in-person and online instruction. In addition to teaching, developing and refining teaching materials, utilizing current teaching methodologies, incorporating research experiences for students into the curriculum, and providing service to the department, campus, and community are also required. The Southern and Dobson campus is one of the largest in the Maricopa Community College system, boasting extensive resources for both students and faculty, including well-developed undergraduate research opportunities. The Red Mountain campus is situated within 48ha of the Sonoran Desert that harbors endangered and protected species and has been the recipient of an international award for conservation. Participation in undergraduate research as well as broader campus conservation and sustainability initiatives are desired aspects of the two positions. The Southern and Dobson campus provides the advantage of a modern, large library facility, integrated student support, and an on site Center for Teaching and Learning. The courses at the Southern and Dobson campus include diverse majors and non majors classes reflecting the comprehensive nature of the campus. The Red Mountain campus has an allied healthcare focus, and most students taking biology classes are going into healthcare related fields and with some biology majors. Regardless of the campus, candidates must be adaptable, capable of working both independently and collaboratively, and ready to contribute to a range of interdisciplinary and institutional initiatives.
Essential Functions
Minimum Qualifications
A Master's degree or higher with 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field or a Master's degree or higher in the teaching field is required.
Desired Qualifications
A. MS or PhD degree within the biological sciences. Broadly trained biologist with experience in cell and molecular biology or organismal biology, and / or anatomy and physiology.
B. College teaching experience in face-to-face lecture and lab setting, teaching students going into healthcare related fields and biology majors.
C. Experience conducting research within the biological sciences in a lab or field setting involving undergraduate college students
D. Developed face-to-face and online curriculum, lecture, and lab instructional materials using best practices in college education aimed at a diverse and underprepared student population, including real and substantive interaction in online courses and accessible course materials
E. Demonstrated innovation and creativity related to science education
F. Demonstrated commitment to service to the department and college.
G. Experience mentoring students outside of classroom instruction
Special Working Conditions
May be required to teach at multiple sites and may be assigned to day, evening or weekend classes as needed.
Exposure to biology laboratory chemicals, specimens (including preserved specimens)
May be required to lift up to 25 lbs. with or without a reasonable accommodation
May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
Travel to campus during the interview / selection process will be at the candidate's own expense.
