Charitable Allies is a nonprofit aimed at providing affordable, excellent legal services and education to nonprofit organizations around the country. Whether a new animal shelter is looking to get their 501(c)(3) status or, a children's ministry is looking to set safety standards or a nonprofit is defending a regulatory investigation, we are here to help.

Fiscal Sponsorship Allies Inc is a charity that provides fiscal sponsorship services for charitable projects so the project managers can get back to what really matters their charitable mission. The charitable project raises the funds, and FSA takes care of the tax exemption, charitable solicitation registration and donation receipts. It operates as a Model C, pre-approved grantee model. This entity is very fast-growing and will be the primary entity that this role will oversee.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal Chief Financial Officer is ready for a challenge, the opportunity to grow professionally and wants to have a hand in steering an organization(s) through major growth and expansion. This candidate will have a strong understanding of faith-based organizations and complex organizational structures (containing both nonprofit (tax-exempt) and for-profit (business) entities). Demonstrated competence in complex financial topics such as limited partnership accounting, program-related investments, HNW private loan financing, trust accounting, Model C fiscal sponsorship coupled with the tax considerations related to these each of these topics.

About the Position

The CFO will supervise all aspects of financial management, treasury management, accounting, tax and related responsibilities for all of our affiliated entities. Our current accounting manager has 30+ years of experience, has served as primary controller of the largest division of a large corporation ($100m+ in annual revenue) and as CFO of two different and corporate enterprises ($25m+ to $45m+ in revenue). He will be a wealth of knowledge and support for the CFO and he desires to invest in and mentor an up-and-coming candidate so that he can retire well in the coming years.

Responsibilities of the Position

  • Supervises accounting team to ensure accurate and timely completion of regular accounting tasks
  • Works regularly with key vendors, sponsees and partners to ensure completion of key tasks
  • Establishes and maintains processes surrounding alternative investments and other complex financial matters
  • Prepares and presents company financial information for the board of directors
  • Interfaces with Accounting Manager to coordinate month close activities, such as account reconciliations, GJEs (e.g., prepaid expenses, others) and preparation of financial statements.
  • Annually completes year-end activities (e.g., W-2s, 1099s, etc.) and provides materials for and answers questions of the independent audit firm
  • Handles all accounting functions for Philanthropic Legal Group, a related entity
  • Oversees annual budgeting for the organization alongside the CEO and COO
  • Conducts periodic reviews to ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversees internal control and all other financial policies, including editing / revising the policies from time to time.
  • Regularly communicates the status of tasks and special projects with the leadership team.
  • Ensures completion of all annual business filings and renewals, including Business Entity Reports, attorney license renewals, membership renewals, insurance renewals, IRS Form 990, IN-DOR Form NP-20, etc.
  • Stays current on best practices and continually educates internal team members and clients on trends and regulatory or compliance changes.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in accounting or finance with increasing responsibilities
  • Prefer experience with alternative investment strategies such as debt financial agreements, program-related investments and / or private loan financing
  • Prefer experience with partnership accounting including capital accounts
  • Comfort working with faith-based organizations like ministries and churches
  • Comfortable with standard technology platforms including QBO, Google Sheets, Excel, Gmail, Google Calendar, Bill.com
  • Comfortable with merchant account processing portals (Stripe, LawPay, Intuit Payments), online banking, treasury management
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Great communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to learn how to use CRM software like Salesforce for report generation and data management purposes (prior experience not needed)
  • Desire to help nonprofit organizations reach their missions
  • Strong time management skills
  • Personal and professional integrity and business ethics, as well as respect for others
  • Positive and can do attitude
  • Education / Certifications

  • 4-year degree or higher
  • Preferred CPA exam-eligible or CPA license
  • Compensation and Benefits

    This full-time position has a full earning potential of $150,000-$220,000, including bonuses. Additional benefits include our 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan with a 5% employer match, health, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, paid opportunities for professional development and continuing education, and other personal and professional benefits.

    The first 90 days of the position will be in the Indianapolis office. Dependent upon performance, this position will have the option to work from home one or two days per week.

    The Process

    A candidate that successfully completes the full process will :
