Position Summary
As part of the Department of Research and Laboratory Safety, the Chemical Safety Specialist (CSS) plays a critical role in supporting chemical safety, laboratory compliance, hazardous waste management, and other programs across NYU’s research and academic portfolio. Works independently while applying regulatory knowledge and best practices while maintaining a safe and compliant laboratory environment. Ensure compliance with NYC DEP SARA Right-to-Know, EPA, OSHA, DEC, FDNY, DEA, and NYS DOH regulations. Develops and implements the chemical inventory inspection program, supports the Chemical Hygiene Plan, conducts lab inspections, and performs risk and exposure assessments to maintain a safe laboratory environment.
Qualifications
Required Education :
Bachelor's Degree In Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Physical Sciences or closely related scientific field
Preferred Education :
Master's Degree In Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Physical Sciences, or closely related scientific field
Required Experience :
3+ years Relevant experience in a professional safety role, including experience providing chemical hygiene services in a university environment and developing and providing training programs.
Preferred Experience :
5+ years Increasingly responsible managerial level experience with Environmental Health and Safety. Experience providing chemical hygiene services in a university environment. Experience developing and providing training programs. Experience evaluating and testing ventilation systems. Additional desired qualifications include current IATA, DOT, HAZWOPER, and RCRA training.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities :
Demonstrated ability to conduct audits or quality assurance tasks, write concise summaries, and follow up on deficiencies. Must be able to wear and use appropriate protective equipment as necessary. Ability to respond to campus emergencies after hours and on weekends / holidays, as needed. Wide and comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local occupational regulations, professional standards, and best safety practices. Excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to write technical reports and related professional correspondence. Ability to act independently and as a team member. Strong computer software skills.
Additional Information
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $85,000.00 to USD $105,000.00. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education / training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
