Occupational Summary

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) provides oversight and leadership of all aspects related to the DCRI's operations. The COO will serve as a member of the DCRI Executive Management Team (EMT), contributing to all aspects of DCRI's overall strategy, culture, project delivery, prioritization, and resource allocation. This includes, but is not limited to, developing and implementing plans for the operational infrastructure in the form of policies, systems, processes and staff engagement to improve the overall operations and effectiveness of the organization.

Work Performed

Operations Management :

Oversees and manages the operational and strategic progress of the DCRI functional groups, which encompass Clinical Operations, Core Services and Industry Partnerships.

Leads the operationalization of the organization's strategic vision.

Identifies opportunities to leverage and / or redesign processes, tools, and technology to improve and / or increase efficiency of DCRI operations.

Participates in and provides leadership for DCRI wide initiatives that seek to enhance operational and translational capabilities, services and outcomes.

Works with faculty, functional group leaders and staff of the DCRI to engender a culture of accountability where specific goals are developed, communicated and measured, and expectations are clear.

Assists the DCRI Executive Director in the development and implementation of DCRI strategies and goals by providing recommendations regarding all major strategic and financial decisions.

Provides guidance to direct reports in ensuring DCRI staff within their groups are engaged and provided growth opportunities, delivering quality work, successfully building relationships with funders and partners, developing operational plans and timelines for all projects and initiatives, and monitoring progress against goals.

Ensures resources are managed in an effective way across all the operational groups to achieve financial and business objectives.

Fosters engagement, team building and consensus across the DCRI and external research community through regular meetings, collaboration, and other professional methods (i.e. attendance at scientific meetings).

Partners with DCRI's Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to assess fiscal requirements, functional group budgets, manage expenditures, and ensure the overall fiscal responsibility of the operational groups.

Collaborates effectively with the executive, administrative, and operational leaders across the DCRI and with leadership in the broader School of Medicine community to advance the mission and objectives of the DCRI and more broadly Duke.

Represents the DCRI in a variety of external forums including industry meetings, professional association meetings, and public private partnerships to foster the cultivation of industry relationships, that benefit the goals of DCRI.

Finds ways to utilize other resources within Duke to create bidirectional efficiencies, per the One Duke model, and facilitates the One Duke mindset.

Acts as the Lead Crisis Manager for DCRI's Business Continuity purposes and represents DCRI on the Duke Office of Scientific Integrity - Research Quality Management Team.

Strategic & Business Development :

In partnership with the DCRI Executive Director, Industry Partnership group and DCRI faculty, serves as an operational leader in the DCRI's effort to develop business opportunities with key sponsors / funders of research as well as other DCRI collaborators, academic groups, partners, and vendors.

Works closely with DCRI faculty to support their research interests and to ensure quality operational delivery of their research programs.

Works with faculty, operational leaders and our Industry Partnership group to drive new business opportunities and provide accurate budgeting and clear scope. Also, liaises with key partners (federal and commercial) to cultivate long-term relationships and serves as a point of escalation when necessary.

Participates with the DCRI Executive Management Team and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) to evaluate DCRI's strategy on an ongoing basis - ensuring we evolve where necessary to meet the expectations of our collaborators while staying aligned with DCRI's mission.

Personnel Management :

Ensures appropriate resourcing and prioritization that aligns with the overall mission of the organization. Leads and inspires operational personnel to effectively achieve objectives and navigate challenges in an efficient and productive way with clear expectations. Ensures ongoing succession planning and acts as a mentor to DCRI leaders throughout the organization.

Identifies and recruits key staff in collaboration with DCRI Human Resources. Oversees, directs and effectively utilizes all operational resources through direct reports and other managers.

Oversees performance management for operations staff including the development of job specific performance standards, individual development plans, professional development needs, and annual performance evaluations.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education / Training

Bachelor's degree required. Bachelor's degree in a health-related discipline (i.e., nursing, pharmacy or allied health profession) preferred.

Experience

Minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in clinical research operations (including 5 years in a leadership capacity) in a coordinating center environment, a contract research, a pharmaceutical, medical device, or biotechnology company or in an academic research organization.

Leadership experience in both academic and corporate environments is preferred. P&L management experience preferred.

A Master's degree may substitute for two years of relevant experience.

Skills
