Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer (EVP, CFO)

The Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer (EVP, CFO) serves as the organization's senior financial leader and is a strategic partner for both the Chief Executive Officer and the executive leadership team. The Chief Financial Officer is an expert in the current financial landscape of healthcare organizations, challenging payor reimbursement, government payors and relationships, and provides strategic financial guidance to executive leadership and senior management. The EVP, CFO will require strong performance and transformational management on a wide variety of financial strategy and operations and be an organizational expert in payer strategy, revenue optimization and performance management. The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for overseeing all financial functions, including financial planning and analysis, capital and operational budgeting, revenue cycle, accounting, and financial reporting to support the organization's performance and long-term growth.

In this role, the EVP, CFO partners closely with leaders across Connecticut Children's and its affiliates to drive financial performance, inform enterprise decision-making, and align financial strategies with operational and strategic priorities. As a member of the Executive Management Team (EMT), the EVP, CFO contributes to organizational planning and ensures financial considerations are integrated into key initiatives and investments.

The EVP, Chief Financial Officer will monitor changes in the healthcare landscape and regulatory environment, assesses financial risk and opportunity, and ensures the organization maintains strong financial stewardship while advancing its mission.

Responsibilities

Role Responsibilities:

  • Participate and partner with the EMT in development and implementation of key initiatives to enhance the institution's viability and to move it towards a proactive, high performing culture.
  • Strategically assess payor contracts and build a proactive and comprehensive payor contracting strategy to support healthy growth of the health system.
  • Partner with EMT on assessing the current strategy as well as assess opportunities across the system for improved performance.
  • Support innovative strategies in providing the highest level of child healthcare and lead financials systems that support this work.
  • Partner with research leaders and accounting in supporting accurate financial structure to support research growth.
  • Develop, interpret, coordinate and administer Connecticut Children's financial policies.
  • Provide accurate, timely reports on all financial activities, and serve as strategic business partner to all members of the Executive Management Team.
  • Develop short and long term financial plans consistent with Connecticut Children's vision and lead annual budget process to ensure consistency.
  • Oversee the accounting, budget and revenue cycle functions of the organization ensuring timely and accurate financial close, effective and efficient revenue cycle and a smooth budget process.
  • Collaborate with the Board's Investment Committee to manage Connecticut Children's endowment, retirement plans, and pension funds consistent with the long-range financial plan.
  • Provide leadership to direct reports in the areas of finance, budget, patient accounts, general support services and health information. Serve as mentor to department leadership.
  • Actively participates with CEO, government relations staff and other leaders to ensure Connecticut Children's meets necessary financial regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Sit on the Board of the Hospital Self-insured Captive, assuring appropriate due diligence in overseeing the financial and risk aspects of insured products, as well as continually assessing the captive effectiveness and proactively understanding other markets that may be beneficial for Connecticut Children's to engage in.
  • Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the Connecticut Children's standards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to improve decision support and decision making.
  • Strong leader and mentor energized by elevating organizational financial acumen.
  • Experience with alternative payment models and unique payer partnerships.
  • Ability to proactively identify trends impacting organizational financial strength and develop strategies to mitigate risk.
  • Must be able to work well with the Connecticut Children's Board of Directors, all levels of management, physicians and external auditors.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field
  • 10+ years of progressive financial leadership, including senior-level roles
  • Experience leading core finance functions (FP&A, reporting, revenue cycle)
  • Proven executive partnership and enterprise decision support
  • Hospital finance experience, including reimbursement and regulatory knowledge
  • Strong understanding of Medicaid and other government payors
  • Strongly prefer experience in academic research accounting and reporting

Preferred:

  • MBA, MHA or Masters in related field
  • CPA preferred
  • CFO or divisional finance leadership in a complex healthcare system
  • Experience driving growth, margin improvement, or transformation initiatives
  • Board and finance committee engagement experience
  • Familiarity with value-based care and pediatric healthcare environments
