Job Summary
Anticipated hiring salary is between $211,599 - $248,940 depending on qualifications
The Chief Information Officer (CIO) position is a critical executive position that reports to the Port of Tacoma Executive Director. This role is responsible to deliver Information Technology services for the Port of Tacoma (Port) and Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA). The CIO leads an IT management team consisting of four Sr. Managers and 20 full-time employees and contractors.
The CIO cultivates business partnerships with Port and NWSA business leaders and facilitates the executive IT Steering Committee to govern the ~$2-5 million in annual IT project investments and ~$12-15 million annual IT operating budget. This position requires an ability to lead the IT Vision 2030 that includes an organizational digital transformation of the Port and NWSA operations.
Over the prior five years, the Port of Tacoma Information Technology department has completed a major IT transformation. The IT management team and employees have successfully executed the following strategies :
- Adopted IT Service Management with ServiceNow and continual improvement
- Driven Enterprise Application rationalization and full migration to the Cloud
- Implemented MS Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations with plans for further expansion
- Enhanced adoption of MS 365 for collaboration and records management
- Implementing a Data Driven program with MS Azure and Power BI
- Invested in NWSA Port Community System to enhance gateway transparency and performance
- Delivered an Infrastructure Optimization and Resiliency program including an out-of-region data center
- Enhanced business partnerships and IT Governance
- Implemented a Cybersecurity Program with significant investments to manage cyber risks
- Completed two IT career model refreshes and an ongoing IT employee development program
The CIO will be responsible to oversee the technology investments and implementation for the new Port Business Center facility located at the Maritime 253 site that will open in 2027.

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s in information technology or a related field is required.
A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in at least two or more areas of information technology is required. Must have experience in leadership through managing multiple divisions and / or departments. Demonstrated experience in managing projects independently, playing a leadership role in a team decision-making environment, and coaching and counseling employees and managers is also required.
Experience with an Information Technology organization that provides shared services to multiple organizations or lines of business is preferred.
For internal candidates only : a minimum of six (6) years’ experience in a managerial role in the Port’s IT department may substitute for 10 years related experience in a similar position, including hands-on time spent in at least two (2) IT disciplines.
Additional Requirements
This position is responsible for leading a team of leaders comprised of the Sr Manager Enterprise Applications; Sr Manager IT Infrastructure & Information Security; Manager, IT Project Management and Manager, IT Service. This position is responsible for the Port’s and Alliance’s resource requirements through technology implementation to achieve organizational priorities. Decisions and recommendations will affect critical projects, programs, operations and the attainment of long-term goals of the department and organization. Drives the course of action to implement effective strategies and motivates others to deliver on targeted objectives. Represents the organization both outside and inside the organization. Responsible for establishing departmental priorities, implementing the department's strategic plan and vision, and the overall management of assigned department.
