Job Summary
The CMIO serves as the primary physician champion and executive physician leader for all major clinical information and informatics efforts. The CMIO has broad responsibilities overseeing and collaboratively developing strategy, guiding annual goal setting, and prioritizing institutional effort within and across all domains of clinical informatics. This role provides leadership to a broad range of staff and physicians in all parts of the organization who directly manage planning, research, development, implementation, and optimization of clinical information technology. The CMIO works closely with the Associate Chief Medical Information Officers (ACMIOs), Chief Information Officer (CIO), Associate Chief Information Officers (ACIOs), Chief Operating Officer (COO), Chief Quality Officer (CQO), Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), and Chief Experience Officer (CXO) to drive clinical information technology advancements that are aligned with Denver Health's Mission and Strategic Plan.Â
Provides thought leadership on IT strategy, emerging innovations, threats, and best practices, to include but not limited to, development and adoption of clinical protocols, improvement in clinical workflows, enhancements to clinician communication, improvement in clinician efficiency, and adoption of artificial intelligence and other technology tools within the electronic health record (EHR).Â
Acts as liaison and executive sponsor to the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and IT teams, to engage and guide them toward optimal clinical design and deployment of Epic and related EHR-based tools and technologies.
Provides clinical and operational expertise to the Epic team regarding ongoing enhancements and optimizations to Epic.
Provides expertise regarding industry trends and how Denver Health should respond, both in setting internal strategy / priorities and in selecting outside vendor partners.
Guides collaborative decision-making with other executive leaders regarding capital, personnel, and operational budget decisions related to IT.
Essential Functions :
EXECUTIVE TEAM, CLINICAL STAFF, AND EPIC LIAISON :
- Â Chair or participate in committees, standing meetings, etc. as assigned.
- Â Provide guidance and leadership in efforts to improve clinical informatics systems through annual IT projects, ad hoc problem solving and Lean events, etc.
- Â Listen and respond to members of the medical staff and clinical workforce to ensure clinician concerns and ideas related to the EHR and other clinical technologies are heard and addressed.
- Â Identify opportunities for continuous improvement of clinical IT / EHR systems through improvement projects as well as clinician training and development related to IT / EHR systems.
- Â Evaluate new technology that will impact clinical care delivery and the EHR and make recommendations to Denver Health leaders on adoption and integration.
- Â Jointly approve operating and capital budgeting decisions that allocate resources and prioritize essential work and projects related to IT / EHR with the CIO, CMO, CNO, COO, and CQO.
- Â Monitor EHR Meaningful Use criteria of electronic medical records systems and ensure that the organization meets all criteria and external regulations related to clinical information systems.
- Â Develop and lead partnerships between clinical operations, clinical informatics, quality and patient safety, and the research community to advance and evaluate effective use of all clinical informatics tools to meet Denver Health's Mission.
- Â Jointly develop electronic analytics, decision support, and workflow support tools in service of the quality and patient safety goals of the organization with the CMO, CNO, COO, CQO, and CXO.
- Â Develop clinical informatics leaders in partnership with ACNIO, ACMIOs and CQO : Â through direct oversight and coaching, create team capabilities for ongoing tool and project governance, process improvement, workflow redesign, change management and clinical decision support standards.
- Â Chair or participate in committees, standing meetings, etc. as assigned.

Education :
Doctorate Degree Accredited Medical School, Required.
Post Graduate Diploma or Certificate Program Completed in an Accredited Residency Program, Required.
Post Graduate Diploma or Certificate Program / Clinical Informatics Board Certification, Preferred.
Work Experience :
Minimum 5 years experience working specifically in a healthcare informatics leadership role.
Minimum 5 years general leadership experience with evidence of leading complex change and people within an organization.
3-5 years of evidence of successful collaboration with executives and physician colleagues required.
3-5 years additional expertise sought includes project management, change management, contract negotiation, and vendor
management.
