Description
Under the limited supervision of the Fire Chief, the Battalion Chief is responsible for managing daily emergency response operations, supervising field personnel, and ensuring the safe, effective, and efficient delivery of fire suppression, EMS, rescue, and special operations services. This role provides leadership and operational oversight to shift personnel, supports training and professional development efforts, and ensures adherence to departmental policies and protocols. The Battalion Chief may serve as the Incident Commander at emergency scenes and acts in the capacity of the Fire Chief. This is an exempt position that will work in Fire Administration.

Examples of Duties
Emergency Operations Oversight : Provide command and control at emergency scenes including fires, EMS calls, hazardous materials incidents, and rescue operations. Ensure proper deployment of resources and maintain situational awareness during active incidents.
Shift Supervision : Direct and support company officers and field personnel across assigned shifts. Monitor staffing levels and adjust as necessary to maintain operational readiness.
Training & Readiness : Coordinate and supervise daily training activities to ensure personnel readiness and compliance with departmental standards. Support the Training Division in planning and evaluating drills, certifications, and continuing education.
Incident Reporting & Quality Assurance : Review incident reports and performance metrics to ensure accuracy, compliance, and continual improvement in service delivery.
Policy Implementation & Enforcement : Ensure compliance with department SOPs, city policies, and applicable state and federal regulations. Participate in SOP development and review.
Resource Management : Monitor the readiness and condition of apparatus, equipment, and facilities. Coordinate with Logistics and Fleet divisions for maintenance and repair needs.
Professional Standards & Personnel Development : Support the evaluation, coaching, and mentoring of assigned personnel. Assist with employee performance reviews, investigations, and disciplinary actions as needed.
Emergency Preparedness & Mutual Aid : Participate in regional emergency planning efforts and mutual aid coordination. Maintain knowledge of emergency management protocols and participate in EOC operations as needed.
Acting Fire Chief duties : Serve as Acting Fire Chief when designated, including attending meetings, managing operations, and serving as liaison to external agencies.
Administrative Support : Assist with operational reporting, staffing documentation, after-action reviews, and special projects as assigned.
Other Related Duties : Performs other related duties as assigned, including serving as a back-up to the Battalion Chief (Administration) when needed.
Typical Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, Business, or related field
Minimum six (6) years of Fire / EMS experience, including at least four (4) years at the rank of Company Officer or higher
Demonstrated administrative and leadership experience within a municipal fire department setting
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
- Valid Texas Class C Driver's License
- Texas Commission on Fire Protection Advanced Firefighter Certification
- Fire Officer I & II (TCFP)
- Instructor II (TCFP)
- EMT-Paramedic (Texas DSHS)
- NIMS ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800
- Equivalent combinations of education, certification, and experience may be considered
