Job description

Goodwill of Western and Northern Connecticut is seeking driven individuals to join us in our mission to help others and serve our local communities.

The CFO position ensures sound fiscal policy management for the entire agency. The position has a critical role in shaping and executing the organization's financial strategy, driving operational excellence, and directly supporting the strategic development of new and existing retail locations.

Directs the financial affairs of Goodwill and Helms Housing and prepares financial analyses of operations, including interim and final financial statements with supporting schedules, for the guidance of management. The CFO is responsible for the company's financial plans and policies, accounting practices, the conduct of its relationships with lending institutions, the maintenance of fiscal records, and the preparation of financial reports in accordance with established accounting principles, i.e. GAAP.

Responsibilities : Strategic Leadership

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the CEO and Board of Directors in developing and implementing the organization's financial, operational, and growth strategies.
  • Develop financial models and business cases to guide decision-making on retail store expansion, including site selection, leasing, acquisitions, and capital investment.
  • Lead long-range financial planning aligned with Goodwill's mission, ensuring scalability and sustainability.
  • Oversee the timely preparation, analysis, and presentation of accurate and timely financial reports. Effectively communicate key insights and performance metrics to diverse stakeholders, adapting messaging to align with varying levels of financial literacy and organizational priorities.
  • Gather, analyze, and maintain financial data from diverse sources to provide strategic insights and support informed decision-making by executive leadership.
  • Financial Oversight

  • Oversee all aspects of financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, accounting, reporting, and compliance.
  • Implement and maintain strong internal controls and financial policies.
  • Provide strategic oversight of the organization's cash flow to ensure optimal liquidity, minimize financial risk, and support long-term operational and investment objectives.
  • Lead cash forecasting, banking relationships, and treasury strategies that maximize returns on idle cash and maintain adequate working capital.
  • Responsible for compliance with all federal, state and local corporate rules and regulations, payrolls, and applicable taxes.
  • Oversees payroll operations including tax compliance, general ledger posting, and payroll audits.
  • Manage the preparation of the annual financial audit and the filing of required tax documents, including Form 990.
  • Supervise the purchasing function to optimize costs while ensuring quality standards and implementing the best supply chain practices.
  • Determines which expenditures meet the capitalization criteria.
  • Evaluates and recommends insurance coverage for protection against property losses and potential liabilities.
  • Store Development and Expansion

  • Partner closely with the retail team to analyze potential store locations, assess financial viability, and ensure alignment with the organization's strategic goals.
  • Build financial models to project the return on investment (ROI) for new stores and renovations.
  • Monitor the financial performance of all retail locations, recommend strategies to optimize profitability and operational efficiency.
  • Organizational Growth and Innovation

  • Lead the financial analysis and funding strategies for new programs, service lines, and community initiatives.
  • Leverage strong IT knowledge to partner with the VP of Information Technology on implementing software solutions that enhance operational efficiency.
  • Identify and secure funding opportunities to support expansion, including traditional financing, grants, and public-private partnerships.
  • Support development efforts by providing financial insights and guidance for grant applications.
  • Leadership

  • Manage, mentor, and grow a talented finance team, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee outsourced financial relationships including audit, tax, banking, and investment advisors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Requirements :

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field (Master's or MBA preferred).
  • CPA designation preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible financial leadership experience, preferably in a nonprofit or retail environment.
  • Experience leading or supporting retail growth, including site evaluation, lease negotiation, and capital project oversight.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, GAAP, and compliance requirements.
  • Proven ability to think strategically and execute tactically.
  • Dynamic communication skills, both written and oral, to present ideas financial information clearly to diverse audiences.
