Job description

Job Title

Under general supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor. The purpose of this position is to ensure the safety of Aquatic team members, customers and patrons who visit the facilities and to manage the day-to-day operation of the facility. Will supervise team members, enforce policies and practices, assist with the McKinney Swim School Program, plan, and administer in-service training and provide quality customer service.

Essential Functions/Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

General expectations for all employees include understanding how team, department, and City goals are interconnected, contributing to a positive work culture, maintaining regular and reliable attendance, assessing work performance, contributing to the development of others, working as part of a team, continuously learning and developing, and complying with all city policies and procedures.

  • Ensure the safety of Aquatic Team Members and the members, customers and patrons who visit the facilities.
  • Supervise Aquatic Team Members and give directions to accomplish daily goals and objectives.
  • Set rotation, find replacements for absent staff, monitor the number of guards needed and placement of guard stands
  • Ensure appropriate ratio of swim instructors to patrons and proper use of safety equipment.
  • Monitor the behavior and professionalism of the aquatic team.
  • Promote public relations with facility users and outside organizations.
  • Day to day operations including opening and closing the facility and completing cash reports.
  • Oversee McKinney Swim School Program, provide swim lesson evaluations, instructor evaluations, and session preparation.
  • Plan and execute in-service training.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the facilities.
  • Pool chemistry, such as regular checks, disinfecting and filtering.
  • Comply with all city policies and procedures, including those defined in the City of McKinney Employee Handbook
  • Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in city and department attendance policies and procedures.
  • May be required to travel to other facilities to fulfill staffing needs or attend meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed.

Knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors include embracing and embodying the City's core values of Respect, Integrity, Service, and Excellence (R.I.S.E.), effective communication, producing desired work outcomes, planning and organizing work, extensive knowledge of the McKinney Parks and Recreation department and the Aquatics area, effective communication with the public, especially children, availability for rotating schedules that include weekends and evenings, working in a team environment, building professional relationships, offering flexibility and adaptability, and effective communication both orally and in writing.

Required Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, supplemented by 2 years of aquatic experience, American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification training with CPR/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer, McKinney Swim School Instructor certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months following employment, and availability for rotating schedules that will include weekends and evenings. Conditions of employment include passing a drug screen and background check, having a Class C Texas Driver's License, and being at least 18 years old.

Physical Demands/Supplemental

Physical demands include constantly talking, hearing, reaching with hands and arms, lifting and exerting force up to ten (10) pounds, sitting, occasionally lifting and exerting force up to fifty (50) pounds, standing, walking, climbing/balancing or stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, and adjusting eye focus. Work environment includes exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids, wet or humid non-weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat (non-weather), and exposure to toxic and/or caustic chemicals.
