Community Information

Benicia, California, is a historic city located in Solano County on the north bank of the Carquinez Strait in the San Francisco Bay Area. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 27,131.

History

Established in 1847, Benicia served as the capital of California from 1853 to 1854. The city boasts a rich history, with several historic buildings and sites that reflect its storied past.

Arts and Culture

Benicia has a vibrant arts scene, primarily through the efforts of Arts Benicia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to stimulating, educating, and nurturing cultural life in the city through visual arts. Located in the historic Benicia Arsenal at 1 Commandant's Lane, Arts Benicia offers year-round exhibitions, educational programs, and classes for artists and the broader community. Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM during exhibitions, and admission is free.

Community Events

The city hosts several annual events that bring the community together:

  • Benicia Peddler's Fair: One of the largest street fairs in Northern California, this outdoor event began in 1963 and traditionally occurs on July 3rd. It features a variety of vendors, food, and entertainment along First Street.

  • Fourth of July Parade: The parade stretches along First Street and typically includes music, dancing, floats, horses, clowns, and live entertainment, fostering a strong sense of community pride.

  • Feast of the Holy Ghost: Celebrated on the fourth Sunday in July, this festival honors a tradition established by Queen Isabel of Portugal. The day includes a parade to St. Dominic's Church, Mass, an auction, and a dance, reflecting the city's rich cultural heritage.

Education

The Benicia Unified School District operates the city's public schools, including:

  • Elementary Schools: Matthew Turner, Robert Semple, Mary Farmar, and Joe Henderson.

  • Middle School: Benicia Middle School.

  • High Schools: Benicia High School and Liberty High School.

Public Library

While neighboring cities are served by the Solano County Library system, Benicia operates its own independent public library, the Benicia Public Library. This library offers a wide range of resources, programs, and services to meet the educational and recreational needs of the community.

Lifestyle and Wellness

  • Outdoor Activities: Benicia is located near scenic areas, including parks, walking trails, and waterfronts. The active lifestyle of many residents may influence the types of preventive care and wellness counseling you offer, such as promoting exercise, healthy eating, and mental well-being.

  • Diet and Lifestyle: Being a family-oriented community, dietary counseling and promoting healthy habits may also be essential, especially for children and elderly populations.

  • Small-Town Feel with Urban Access: Benicia offers the benefits of small-town life with a slower pace while being close to major metropolitan areas like San Francisco and Sacramento. This could provide a good work-life balance, with access to urban amenities when desired, but a more peaceful setting for daily life.

Community Demographics

  • Population: Benicia is a small city in Solano County, with a population of approximately 28,000 people. It has a mix of young families, working professionals, and retirees.

  • Diversity: The community is diverse, with a mix of ethnic backgrounds.

Benicia offers a peaceful, picturesque lifestyle with easy access to big-city amenities, making it an appealing place to live.
