Job description

Senior Director of Civil Engineering - Regional Practice Leader

At Core States Group, the work you do matters to the clients we serve, the communities we support, and the teams who rely on one another to deliver with excellence. Our cause is powerful: to create a world where all environments improve everyday life.

This is a senior leadership opportunity to shape the next stage of Core States Group's regional civil engineering platform. The Senior Director of Civil Engineering - Regional Practice Leader will influence how regional businesses grow, how teams develop, how clients experience Core States, and how our reputation is strengthened across the nation.

This role is for a proven leader who wants broader impact: building stronger regional practices, deeper leadership capacity, greater market presence, and a culture of excellence across priority office markets.

The Senior Director of Civil Engineering - Regional Practice Leader, is responsible for growing, strengthening, and leading Core States Group's regional civil engineering practices across the West Region.

This leader will build strong teams, expand client relationships, develop leaders, improve practice performance, and drive sustainable growth across Core States Group's regional businesses. The right candidate will bring an entrepreneurial mindset, strong business judgement, technical credibility, and the ability to build trust with clients, teams, and executive leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow regional civil engineering practices across the West Region with accountability for client service, team performance, overall financial performance, quality, and sustainable growth.
  • Develop and execute regional practice strategies aligned with Core States Group's business objectives, market opportunities, and client priorities.
  • Strengthen local brand recognition, operational density, cultural density, and regional market presence in priority office markets.
  • Identify growth opportunities within existing and emerging markets and help position Core States for long-term regional success.
  • Build, mentor, and develop high-performing regional civil engineering teams with leadership depth across offices, disciplines, and practices.
  • Create a culture of accountability, ownership, collaboration, service, and continuous improvement.
  • Strengthen client relationships by understanding client needs, anticipating challenges, and positioning Core States as a trusted advisor.
  • Partner with market leaders and technical teams to support strategic pursuits and expand regional opportunities.
  • Help teams communicate the Core States value proposition clearly, including integrated delivery, responsiveness, technical quality, speed to market, cost certainty, and practical business solutions.
  • Promote strong delivery practices related to scope management, schedule performance, budget accountability, quality, client communication, and project execution.
  • Use performance data, client feedback, and business insight to identify trends, address gaps, and improve predictability across the practice.

Success Measures

  • Stronger local brand recognition and regional market presence in priority office markets.
  • A culture of excellence, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement across regional businesses.
  • Sustainable practice growth and improved overall financial performance.
  • Stronger leadership depth and talent development across regional teams.
  • Stronger client relationships, increased responsiveness, and expanded repeat business.
  • Greater consistency in quality, communication, and delivery across regional civil engineering practices.

Qualifications

We are looking for a senior civil engineering leader with strong business judgement, practice leadership capability, technical credibility, and the ability to lead both growth and execution. The right leader must understand how to run and grow a regional practice as a business, not simply manage engineering production.

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline required.
  • Professional Engineering license strongly preferred.
  • MBA, advanced business degree, or demonstrated business leadership experience strongly preferred.
  • Significant civil engineering leadership experience, including responsibility for client relationships, team leadership, program delivery, overall financial performance, and operational execution.
  • Demonstrated success leading national client programs, scaling delivery teams, improving operational performance, or managing complex client portfolios.
  • Strong business and financial acumen, including the ability to evaluate client growth opportunities, financial performance, staffing, resource planning, workload management, and operational priorities.
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering delivery for multi-site, national, or programmatic clients, including scope, schedule, budget, permitting, quality, and client communication.
  • Experience in civil site development, multi-site engineering, land development, infrastructure, national accounts, or related growth markets.
  • Ability to lead through influence, build trust, align teams, mentor leaders, and communicate effectively with clients, teams, and company leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to identify practical uses for company-approved AI tools to improve team processes, support better decisions, and increase efficiency.
  • Demonstrated ability to review AI-generated content for accuracy, protect confidential information, and remain responsible for the final work product.

Leadership Qualifications

The Senior Director of Civil Engineering - Regional Practice Leader must lead with ownership, sound judgement, accountability, humility, a strong sense of stewardship, and a servant leadership mindset.

This person must be highly motivated, business-minded, and capable of making thoughtful decisions in a complex, fast-moving environment. They must be able to build trust with senior leaders, technical experts, market leaders, and client-facing teams while raising the standard for how regional practices operate and serve clients.

This role requires someone who can build on what is already working, strengthen regional business performance, develop people, and help Core States Group build a stronger reputation across the West Region.

Work Location

This role can be based out of the following Core States Group offices: Kent, WA; Puyallup, WA; Bellevue, WA; Chehalis, WA; Richland, WA; Frisco, TX; Bentonville, AR; Klamath Falls, OR; Long Beach, CA; Ontario, CA; Roseville, CA; or Scottdale, AZ.

This can also be a remote position across the western United States. Both will require travel as needed.

Company Overview

Core States Group designs, builds, and manages programs and projects across North America and has been recognized on top lists throughout the architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) industry. Established in 1999, we offer integrated solutions with seamless continuity, and many of the world's most notable brands count on us to deliver speed to market, cost certainty, and compelling design.

With 24 offices across the United States and Canada, Core States Group is an industry powerhouse that drives innovation and improves everyday life for countless people across several markets, including Convenience, Distributed Generation, Financial, Grocery, Housing, Industrial, Restaurants, Retail, Semiconductor, Tribal, Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Infrastructure, and more.

A Note to Candidates

Please do not be concerned if you do not meet every requirement. At Core States Group, we are dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workplace, so if you are excited about this role but your experience does not align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.

This position will remain open until it is filled.
