Job description

The future is now, Willdan is “Envisioning the Future” of clean energy and infrastructure as well as Sustainability through our work with cities, buildings, and transportation.

Willdan is a national leader in energy, engineering, and software consulting services. Since 1964, we have provided all aspects of municipal and infrastructure engineering, including building and safety, public works, public financing, planning, and construction management services. We help engineers, facility owners, municipalities, and utilities meet their long-term goals and transition communities to clean energy and a sustainable future.

Summary

The Civil Engineer plays a key role in delivering engineering projects from initial planning through construction. This position is responsible for supporting the design and analysis of grading, drainage, and utility systems, while applying knowledge of hydrology, hydraulics, and land development processes to develop practical, sustainable solutions.

The role requires strong technical expertise in CAD design and modeling tools, as well as the ability to prepare and review engineering plans, reports, and cost estimates. This individual will collaborate with cross-functional teams, clients, and external stakeholders, contribute to proposal development, and support project execution. Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships are essential, along with a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop budget estimates, manage costs, and track schedules for assigned tasks and projects.
  • Analyze project data to evaluate feasibility and support decision-making.
  • Prepare and review engineering reports, specifications, plans, estimates, designs, and installation schedules.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external partners, including utilities, stakeholders, and community relations representatives.
  • Review and develop improvement plans for grading, drainage, street, sewer, and water projects, including supporting calculations and documentation.
  • Utilize hydrology and hydraulic modeling to design effective solutions for stormwater, sewer, and potable water systems.
  • Contribute to the preparation of engineering proposals, including defining scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Present technical information and project updates to clients and external organizations.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships and support business development efforts.
  • Provide guidance and support in training and mentoring junior staff.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time to support project needs, client meetings, and site visits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support business needs.

Job Requirements / Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • A Master’s degree in a related field is preferable, as are certificates in storm water management or QSP/QSD.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in municipal type infrastructure projects.
  • Valid certificate of registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in CA Preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite tools and PDF software such as Bluebeam Revu.
  • Experience in public works and land development engineering.
  • Understanding of the land development entitlement process.
  • Familiarity with the land development lifecycle from initial application through construction.
  • Proficiency in CAD software such as Civil 3D and MicroStation.
  • Experience with gravity flow and pressure flow modeling tools.
  • Working knowledge of hydrology and hydraulic modeling principles.
  • Ability to prepare, interpret, and review engineering plans, specifications, reports, and cost estimates.
  • Experience supporting proposal development, including scope, schedule, and budget inputs.
  • Strong communication skills, including experience presenting to clients or external groups.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting training or mentoring of staff is a plus.
