Job Summary
The field service technician role involves installing, servicing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and refurbishing CNC machines and related sheet metal equipment for customers across the state. It includes on-site work, remote phone support, preventive maintenance, customer training, and participation in 2–4 trade shows annually. Approximately 75% travel is required, one week a month at home office troubleshooting on the phone, and home on the weekends. The company provides on-the-job training.
Responsibilities
- Analyze work orders, conduct tests, investigate complaints, and resolve issues for new and existing customers.
- Plan daily travel schedules and travel to job sites.
- Install equipment by analyzing requirements, ordering/gathering parts, completing installation, and performing acceptance tests.
- Maintain customer rapport by addressing complaints, suggesting improvements, and recommending system enhancements.
- Keep equipment operational through troubleshooting breakdowns, preventive maintenance, following instructions, managing supplies, and coordinating repairs.
- Document all service and installation actions via forms, reports, logs, and records.
- Maintain confidentiality of service information.
- Train customers on programming and full operation of machinery.
- Provide phone/remote support when not in the field.
- Attend 2–4 trade shows per year.
- Participate in ongoing education and stay current with professional knowledge.
- Support team and company goals as needed.
Requirements
- Strong electrical troubleshooting skills, including VFDs, servo motors, servo drives, and three-phase power.
- Mechanically inclined, with ability to perform mechanical repairs and maintenance.
- Experience with any type of CNC machine
- Ability to troubleshoot CNC controls and understand PLCs (reading/understanding alarms/issues; no coding required).
- Willingness and ability to travel
- Strong ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Skills in analyzing information, using judgment, developing/maintaining client relationships, equipment maintenance, supply management, quality focus, results-driven approach, and strong written/verbal communication.
Preferred Requirements
- Prior experience in CNC folding, press brake, or similar sheet metal industry.
- Strong customer-facing communication skills for on-site and remote troubleshooting.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team while working independently.
Compensation/Benefits
- Hourly rate: $35–$40/hr
- Overtime: Frequently available and common
- $60/day per diem for meals and mileage reimbursement for travel.
