POSITION SUMMARY :

The Cooperation Education Program (Co-op) allows students to integrate classroom learning with a paid work internship directly related to their field of study. Under the general supervision of the Audiology Supervisor or Manager, the co-op student will receive work-site orientation and training. The student will learn on-the-job and will apply learned knowledge and skills to practice a variety of patient treatment and related duties, in a positive, professional manner, adhering to hospital policies, following safety rules and regulations and striving for a positive work experience.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES :

  • Performs hearing screenings on newborn babies after training was carried out, documents appropriately in the electronic medical record.
  • Learns to and then assists in basic audiology procedures and screenings.
  • Instructing patients and families in the use of hearing technology equipment.
  • Troubleshooting hearing technology devices, recommending repairs, and drafting requests for authorization of parts and repairs.
  • Assists with departmental administrative needs.
  • Maintaining organization and recording of hearing technology equipment.
  • Scheduling patient appointments.
  • Attending meetings.
  • Maintaining organization of clinical equipment and records.
  • Entering data into databases and extracting data as needed.
  • Carries out newborn hearing screenings, reporting to the Department of Public Health, and completing clerical duties related to the hearing aid program.
  • Documents patient care activities as applicable based on their educational curriculum.
  • Works assigned days (weekends and holidays included)
  • Interacts with all patients in alignment with hospital standards of customer service, following the AIDET model.
  • Assists in daily tasks of all clinicians and front desk operations to optimize the patient experience.
  • Adjusts, maintains, and keeps inventory of equipment and supplies assigned to area.
  • Attends in-services and staff meetings. Attends in-services on new equipment, procedures and programs.
  • Performs other administrative duties as assigned including but not limited to photocopying, faxing, printing, data entry in word / excel, running various errands, etc.
  • Utilizes hospital’s values and standards as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital’s mission and goals.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION :

  • High school or equivalent required. Must also be actively participating and enrolled in a BMC approved college-level co-op program.
  • Possess at minimum, an associate's degree in audiology from a training program approved by a national certifying body, or a bachelor's degree from a college with a audiology assistant certificate program, or a bachelor's degree with a major in the area of audiology, or possess an associate, bachelor, or advanced degree and complete 18 credit hours in coursework in audiology, 6 of which must be in disorders of speech, language or hearing; other coursework as Board approved.
  • State licensure in Massachusetts as an Audiology Assistant
  • OPTIONAL BUT PREFERRED : completion of ASHA's Audiology Assistants Certification (C-AA)

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED :

  • American Heart Association Basic Life support CPR
  • EXPERIENCE :

  • Completed 20 hours of observation of clinical practice with a licensed audiologist.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSA) :

  • The analytical skills and judgment to interpret data and take the appropriate action in circumstances or situations.
  • Ability to meet BMC's mission statement and attitude toward patient care

  • Effective communication skills (oral and written English) to deal with patients, families, therapists and various members of the healthcare team.
