Position Summary

The Health Underwriter is responsible for assessing medica l risk for a PEO sponsored medical plan. Works within specific limits of authority on assignments requiring significant technical complexity and coordination. Utilizes underwriting policies and guidelines, rating rules and carrier regulations to appropriately price medical risk.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Collects and reviews customer-specific information such as existing group medical plans and rates, employee census, carrier history and previous claim experience to ensure submission completion and accuracy.
• Works with Sales and support teams to ensure all collateral required for quoting is received. Must be able to quickly and clearly explain / request missing items or discrepancies with submission.
• Calculates rates for complex group cases based on thorough analysis of the group's experience, industry, location, size, and demographic nature using underwriting methodologies.
• Develop judgment to assess new business for master medical plans as needed while working with senior underwriters or management, to ensure a profitable book of business.
• Reviews and completes all sales requests and inquiries within company established standards and policy guidelines.
• Updates all underwriting systems as appropriate.
• Provides underwriting knowledge sharing and education to peers and / or members of the sales team.
• Review and become familiar with plan offerings, internal relationships, underwriting and team guidelines, processes, and procedures, company business strategy and organization.
• Must be detail-oriented, but also able to switch quickly from task to task as needed. Must be proficient in using several systems / programs at once.
• Multi-tasking skills are a necessity, with the ability to manage and prioritize several incoming requests at once in a fast-paced environment
