The WFP is seeking an experienced communications professional to join our team to help tell our story, developing and driving earned media strategies nationally, and for states and local chapters. Applicants should have extensive experience with media relations and strategy, and digital organizing. We are looking for candidates with excellent written and organizational skills. An ideal candidate is Spanish-language fluent and has experience working with Spanish-language press. This is a six-month temporary role. This position is remote but must be willing to travel to states in the Southeastern US when needed. Preference given to applicants who live or have experience working in the southeastern region.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage the communications and digital work of Working Families' Southeast Region. The ideal candidate will have a history working in a communications role in the South and is knowledgeable about the history of resistance in the region
- Develop and execute regional, state, and local media plans, including :
- Producing advocacy and electoral campaign messages and strategy documents
- Training Southeast staff in earned media strategies
- Prepping staff and organizers for earned media opportunities
- Building relationships and pitching journalists for coverage, features, and interviews. Writing and / or reviewing press releases, media advisories and statements
- Planning press events
- Drafting opinion pieces
- Writing talking points for staff and volunteers in preparation for earned and paid media, public statements and public testimonies
- Managing crisis communications in conjunction with party wide staff
- Identifying and training WFP spokespeople
- Creating and coordinating social media strategies, including paid media
- Maintaining regional press list to include local, state, and regional outlets
- Implement the Southeast digital program including managing the Southeast Digital Organizer. Along with Digital Organizer, write and disseminate email blasts, social media posts, sms / broadcast messages, etc.
- Develop communications strategies to elevate WFP leaders as movement thought leaders locally, in states and regionally
- Coordinate with state and regional staff on electoral and issue campaigns as well as breaking news
- Identify and navigate regional, state local environments
- Coordinate with electoral campaign staff and organizational partners on traditional and new media
- Coordinate and work with national WFP staff on social media strategies
- Work with national WFP staff to Identify national media opportunities for WFP state issues, candidates, and multi-state campaigns
