The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Truck Driver within various locations.
This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for this position will be placed as a provisional employee. Upon hire, the employee will be required to complete a 90-Day Working test period during which the employee's performance will be evaluated. Employee must successfully complete the designated probation period in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.
DEFINITION : Under direction, drives a truck with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of less than 26,000 pounds to transport nonhazardous materials, equipment, or people; does related work as required.
NOTE : The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be listed.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
1. Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
2. One (1) year of experience in driving a truck with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 26,000 pounds.
3. Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey. Appointees may also be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
NOTE : The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Drives trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 26,000 pounds to pick up, haul, and deliver nonhazardous materials.
2. Receives written and / or verbal assignments and drives trucks of varied types including trucks used for road maintenance and construction work and road oiling, snow plowing, and ice control work.
3. May assist with the repair and installation of snow plows and spreaders.
4. Picks up, loads truck, and delivers nonhazardous materials of varied types.
5. Attends to minor repairs and adjustments on truck.
6. Keeps trucks supplied with gas, oil, and water; keeps garage clean and in order, and keeps records of trips.
7. Checks, cleans, greases, washes, and makes the required adjustments to trucks and other auxiliary equipment.
8. Collects, loads, and unloads (with and without assistance) various types of equipment, furniture, laundry, food products, coal, ashes, garbage, or trash, and delivers same by truck to specified destinations.
9. Operates snow removal equipment to keep roads clear.
10. Keeps records of receipts, deliveries, fuel consumption, and mileage traveled.
11. Drives truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials such as sand, gravel, and bituminous paving material, by pulling levers and turning crank to tilt body and dump contents.
12. May inspect truck prior to operating for proper amounts of fuel, oil, water, and to see that tires are inflated and that lights and brakes work properly.
13. May make minor emergency repairs to trucks such as changing tires or installing light bulbs, fuses, and tire chains.
14. When not engaged in driving a truck or other equipment, may perform other work such as road and landscape construction, building maintenance and repair work, grounds keeping, laboring, or other unskilled work.
15. Perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of the following :
1. Knowledge of the care and maintenance and the competent, safe, and efficient operation of trucks and auxiliary equipment including the cleaning, lubricating, servicing of batteries, and checking of tires and lights.
2. Knowledge of the minor repair procedures that can be done without recourse to the repair shop.
3. Knowledge of the procedures involved in the loading, unloading, and delivery of various nonhazardous materials and in the preparation of simple records, invoices, and receipts.
4. Ability to detect truck driving and operating problems, organize assigned trucking and related work, and develop effective work methods.
5. Ability to understand, remember, and carry out verbal and written directions and to learn quickly from verbal and written explanations and demonstrations.
6. Ability to operate trucks and auxiliary equipment such as snow plows, spreaders, and power take-off in a skilled, safe, and competent manner.
7. Ability to load and unload varied types of freight.
8. Ability to service, clean, and make minor repairs to trucking equipment.
9. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and / or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
10. Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.

SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION
1. Salary Range : $41,360 - $53,865
2. Employment Period : Twelve (12) Months
3. Union Affiliation : Local 617
