Job description

Safety Coordinator

The Safety Coordinator is responsible for the development, monitoring and evaluation of all vehicles, industrial and employee safety programs and procedures at all District facilities and sites. Examples of Essential Functions:

  • Conduct trend analyses for accidents and provides information to Bus Transportation and others.
  • Attend Joint Safety Committee meetings and collaborate with management on safety concerns brought forward and actions taken for resolution.
  • Maintain Automated External Defibrillator program.
  • Work with other staff and/or consultants to assist in the creation of training and education materials for a safe working environment.
  • Meet regularly with Bus and paratransit contract oversight personnel to assure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Maintain and submit Hazardous Materials Business Plans for both North and South Base to local regulatory agencies.
  • Prepare monthly Transit Safety and Security Form (405) Safety Items section for submission to the National Transit Database.
  • Maintain Material Safety Data Sheets, verification of onsite inventory compliance, and on-line availability.
  • Provide orientation on safety related matters for all newly hired District employees.

Examples of Duties:

  • Identify opportunities for safety improvements during inspections to achieve compliance with safety rules and regulations.
  • Address safety critical situations, recommend corrective measures, and prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Participate in safety meetings and collaborate with District staff to identify and resolve safety matters.
  • Prepare and maintain committee agendas, notes, and communications as appropriate.
  • Respond to serious accidents and provide safety oversight for activities during active investigations.
  • Review audit recommendations, accident investigations, and hazard reports.
  • Interpret and apply applicable state, federal, and local policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Monitor industry safety standards, applicable state, federal, and local policies, laws, and regulations to assure District compliance.
  • Participate, plan, coordinate, and assist with emergency drills and exercises.
  • Facilitate and assist with audits conducted by all regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in developing exercises and procedures for emergency and disaster response.

Minimum Qualifications: Sufficient experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. In lieu of a degree, work-related experience that demonstrates the skills and experience necessary to perform this role will be accepted. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Economics, Psychology, or other related field.
  • Two (2) years of full-time safety or transit related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Emergency Response Plans.
  • Bus Operations experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification.
  • Transit Safety and Security Program (TSSP) certification.
  • Effective organizational, analytical and communication skills.
  • Experience with behavior-based or risk reduction safety programs.
  • Knowledge of Cal/OSHA requirements for industrial safety, including construction safety.
  • Operate PC and common software applications.
