Job Description
Johnson County Wastewater (JCW) is looking to fill the position of Customer Service Specialist I or II, depending on candidate qualifications. JCW is responsible for the safe collection, transportation and treatment of wastewater generated by our community. Our work ensures that our lakes, rivers, and streams remain free from disease-causing pathogens and pollutants that are harmful to public health and the environment.
The Customer Service Specialist actively works to ensure customers have a positive experience with Johnson County Government and JCW by professionally assisting county residents, including educating about services and billing.
Position Open : First review of applications will begin on December 9, 2025. This position will remain open until it is filled.
Depending on relevant years of experience, we are recruiting for :
Customer Service Specialist (Customer Service I) - job grade 13.13 pay range $21.01 to $28.43 OR
Customer Service Specialist (Customer Service II) - job grade 14.14 pay range $23.18 to $31.37
Exemplify our customer service mission by consistently serving with the enthusiasm, deep knowledge and kindness customers expect from our high-performing organization.
- Communicate with diverse community members through phone calls, emails and in-person within our communal office setting to resolve a variety of routine and complex needs.
- Effectively support our customers by exchanging or updating account information and explaining billing policies and utility services.
- Patiently support customers in need of deescalation, balance due account resolution, discrepancy remediation, and payment arrangements.
- Provide basic helpdesk troubleshooting to ensure customers can confidently utilize our online tools and website.
- Utilize fundamental mathematics and bookkeeping skills with spreadsheets and formulas to calculate charges, apply payments and adjustment utility bills.
- Review, reconcile and complete preliminary audit of accounts receivables involving cash, checks, and electronic payment transactions. Research and correct discrepancies to ensure accurate application of payment.
- Provide meaningful contributions to our collaborative customer service team. Our team supports each other and works together as dedicated public servants committed to protecting the environment and enhancing our communities.
- Attention to detail, analytical skills, including research skills, ability to interpret data, ability to conceptualize, ability to analyze information, and ability to write and speak formal recommendations based on findings. Basic math and bookkeeping skills. Computer Skills including website helpdesk skills (beginner), troubleshooting (intermediate), basic spreadsheet skills (formatting, simple arithmetic formulas, sorting, filtering, layout for printing), financial management / information records system (beginner), and keyboarding; Written communication skills, including business writing, summarizing, and editing. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Project management skills, including organization, coordination of duties, and accomplishment of goals; Teamwork Skills, ability to be accountable to a team working on a shared workload.
Job Requirements
Minimum Job Requirements :
High school diploma or equivalent is required. May require KS / MO driver's license, depending on department or agency. One year of customer service; one year of cashiering or money handling experience are required. Proficiency utilizing computers and standard software in an office setting is also required.
Communication, emotional intelligence and people skills are preferred.
Johnson County Government requires reference / background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department / Agency.
Preferred Job Requirements :
Associate's degree is preferred. Experience in a call centric customer experience, professional experience applying communication skills, including de-escalation, bookkeeping or accounting support experience computer troubleshooting support experience is preferred. Also, commitment to community service and building connections with people are preferred.
