Academic Success Coordinator

The College of Liberal Arts invites applications for Academic Success Coordinator positions. The Academic Success Coordinator (ASC) position within the Academic Support Center of the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) is a full-time twelve-month Administrative Professional position dedicated to serving majors within the College of Liberal Arts. The College of Liberal Arts serves over 5,000 undergraduate majors. The ASC will advise approximately 330 students.

The Academic Success Coordinator (ASC) plays a supportive role in strengthening departmental and College efforts to provide quality advising and promote undergraduate student success. This position supports an innovative and holistic approach to providing students with the assistance, guidance and resources necessary to be successful. The primary functions of the ASC are to foster successful transition to the university environment for students in their initial semesters, promote the exploration of majors to ensure students' choice of appropriate major, and promote timely graduation.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Advise students in majors as assigned regarding curriculum matters, course offerings, and progress toward their degree.
  • Provide comprehensive advising to students, establishing continuous advising relationships with special attention to first- and second-year students and continue to work with them as needed through graduation, including transition issues.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed advising notes through the online system, track advisees' performance at the end of each semester, and track students on academic probation in order to provide referrals to necessary resources.
  • Implementation of strategic interventions including initiating proactive outreach with at risk students, participating in retention and grade monitoring activities, assisting students with academic difficulties, assisting students on probation, assisting students considering withdrawing from the University, and other items as assigned.
  • Advise students requesting retroactive withdrawals and academic dismissal appeals on how to craft well written appeals and how to develop and communicate a comprehensive action plan for academic improvement and success.
  • Performance of advising activities regarding course selection and sequencing, registration, class schedule revisions, and class credit load recommendations.
  • Interpret curriculum requirements, options, sequencing patterns and best practices across programs while exploring student's goals, future plans, challenges, and obstacles.
  • Academic Success Coordinators are trained to provide advising for two or more CLA academic departments. Applicants will work in any CLA.
  • Understand issues confronting under-represented students, ethnically diverse, military veterans, non-traditional aged, parents, disabled students, International, etc. and help them navigate how and what resources to use as well as gain confidence and connection in order to achieve their personal and professional goals.
  • Work with students to help them develop more sophisticated decision-making skills.
  • Integrate technology and tools for student success into a balanced and holistic approach to advising as time allows.
  • Act as mentors and advocates and professionally communicate with students or families who may become distressed about complex academic policies, individual courses or grades, and/or tuition assessment and lead them to understanding and resolution.
  • Interpret conflict management and conflict resolution decision-making skills when working with dissatisfied individuals. Interpret, apply and enforce University and College of Liberal Arts policies and procedures, as well as State and Federal laws.
  • Model personal and professional ethics in every decision made.
  • Develop and manage registration processes and procedures to ensure students are registered consistent with university deadlines.

Recruitment and Orientation (15%)

  • Assist with presentations and advising at Ram Welcome, Ram Orientation for new and transfer students, recruiting events, and other assigned events for the larger campus community in relation to the College of Liberal Arts.
  • Provide academic advising to undergraduate students and general advising information to parents and families during orientation sessions, and continue regular contact with students through entire education process once the students are on campus.

Collaboration and Professional Development (10%):

  • Collaborate with other college and campus programs to facilitate student success.
  • Participate actively in the Academic Success Coordinator network, including sharing of best practices.
  • Collaborate with other CLA ASCs to create new programs and procedures based on best practices.
  • Collaborate with major department(s), faculty, and staff.
  • Approve and administer course substitutions and waivers for degree requirements with prior major department approval.
  • Provide curricular feedback to department(s) based on knowledge gained from student interactions.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on university policy and procedure and on advising best practices.
  • Learn and maintain ongoing knowledge of new technologies and tools designed for student success.

Data Analysis (5%)

  • Track contacts/outreach/etc. with students, analyze data available through Institutional Research and other necessary university systems, and use that information to produce two separate reports at different times each year.

Conditions of Employment:

Pre-employment criminal background check (required for new hires).

This position reports to CLA's Director of Advising and New Student Experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.A. required in a liberal arts discipline or a BA in a liberal arts discipline and a master's in Student Affairs in Higher Education/College Personnel Administration or Counseling or Career Counseling or a related master's degree.
  • Experience working directly with students in a variety of student populations.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively.
  • Experience with data analysis.
  • Academic advising experience.
  • 1 or more years of experience working with students in higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to do detailed work, prioritize multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting students from all backgrounds and demonstrated experience in creating a welcoming work atmosphere for colleagues, students, faculty, and staff.
