GENERAL DESCRIPTION
: Performs moderately complex (journey-level) data analysis and data research work for Training Operations Division. Work involves planning, analysis, developing, and presenting statistical data and reports. while identifying and interpreting data patterns and trends as well as preparing concise, comprehensive technical reports and dashboards to present and interpret data. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.The following Military Occupational Specialty codes are generally applicable to this position.
Applicants must fully complete the summary of experience to determine if minimum qualifications are met.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Create and develop data gathering methods and techniques for the collection, compilation, analysis, and interpretation of data for the Training
Operations Division.
2. Establish and maintain standard work procedures and policies governing the appropriate use of analysis and data quality to ensure validity,
applicability, efficiency and accuracy.
3. Initiate and coordinate the design of division research projects and present the analytical data and reporting process.
4. Interpret data analysis results to identify but not limited to significant recruiting patterns and trends, endurance program testing, and training
research to report differences for stakeholders.
5. Coordinate work with other departments as well as consult with internal and external customers to identify alternative solutions and make
recommendations on data revisions.
6. Direct the selection of data collection methods and determines the types and sizes of sample groups to be used.
7. Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
8. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:
Education – Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major coursework in data science, business analytics, computer science, computer information systems, management information systems, mathematics, statistics, or related degree.
Experience – Minimum of three (3) years’ experience utilizing Tableau to produce statistical reports, charts/graphs and producing data collection and data manipulation for a large organization. Experience in state government is preferred.
Substitution Note: Additional work experience of the type described or other related education may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.
Licensure and/or Certification – If driving is required, must possess a valid driver license from state of residence.
Regulatory knowledge – Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures.
Statistical knowledge - Thorough knowledge of statistical theory, practices, and techniques. Knowledge of statistics and analyzing data sets; running queries, report writing, and presenting findings; and record keeping, including security procedures for handling, protecting, and distributing confidential data. Skill in the use of a computer and applicable software, in conducting data searches, in evaluating and translating large amounts of data, and in critical thinking. Ability to compile, review, and analyze data; to prepare reports; to maintain accuracy and attention to detail; and to communicate effectively. Knowledge of data models, database design development, data mining, and segmentation techniques. Skill in analyzing problems and devising effective solutions. Skill in selecting appropriate mathematical and statistical methods to meaningful representations of available data, clarify raw data, and present data and derived meanings of data in visual and narrative terms that can be readily understood by lay persons. Skill in developing graphic and narrative supporting documents to describe and clarify statistical data.
Technology – Proficiency with Microsoft Office and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems (e.g. CAPPS, SharePoint, Tableau) and be able to learn new software/systems.
Interpersonal Skills – Must demonstrate an ability to exercise poise, tact, diplomacy and an ability to establish and maintain positive, working/professional relationships with internal/external customers. Must demonstrate DPS’ core values: Integrity, Excellence, Accountability, and Teamwork.

Presentation/Communication Skills – Must be able to construct and deliver clear, concise, and professional presentations and/or communications to a variety of audiences and/or individuals.
Research and Comprehension – Must demonstrate ability to quickly and efficiently access relevant information and be able to utilize and/or present research and conclusions in a clear and concise manner.
Analytical Reasoning/Attention to Detail – Must demonstrate an ability to examine data/information, discern variations/similarities, and be able identify trends, relationships and causal factors, as well as grasp issues, draw accurate conclusions, and solve problems.
Confidentiality and Protected Information – Must demonstrate an ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations and adhere to applicable laws/statutes/policies related to access, maintenance and dissemination of information.
Safety – Must be able to work in safe manner at all times, avoiding shortcuts that have potential adverse results/risks, and must be able to comply with safety standards and best practices.
Schedule and Travel – Availability for after-hours and weekend work may be required. This position may have the ability to telecommute based on the needs of the division/agency.

State of Texas Benefits and Retirement Information: DPS employees who submit applications for posted DPS positions shall notify their immediate supervisor in writing.
A DPS employee who is selected for a position in the same salary group and state title as their current position will be transferred with no salary change.
A DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase of no more than 3.4% over their current salary regardless of posted salary.
Salary is contingent upon qualifications and is subject to salary administration and budgetary restrictions.
