Job description

About Verrus : Data centers should be valuable assets to their customers, the grid, and the local community such that we are able to give customers what they want, where they want it, while cities and utilities are actively seeking us to build in their region.

Verrus will build and operate next generation data centers that flexibly leverage its onsite infrastructure through the development of proprietary technology. Doing so will allow Verrus to provide grid services that facilitate the effective procurement of power and carbon free energy, and balance traditional and variable uptime workloads (e.g., AI / ML).

Verrus is led by industry veterans with experience at the largest data center development companies, delivering over 3 GW of data center capacity across four continents in their careers (representing over $10bn of investment).

About Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners :

Backed by Alphabet, Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, and Stepstone Group, SIP is a consolidated holding company that builds innovative technology-enabled infrastructure companies and projects that deliver positive social and environmental impact at scale. We believe that technology-enabled infrastructure will help to solve some of the world’s most pressing social and environmental challenges.

Following years of research and in collaboration with its current management, SIP formed Verrus to design, build, and operate the world’s most innovative data centers, leveraging unique technology to develop a scaled project portfolio that delivers significant financial, environmental, and innovation outcomes.

Role

Verrus is growing our data center electrical engineering function within the Engineering organization. In this highly cross-functional role, you will be part of a team responsible for the design of the electrical plant through the entire product lifecycle, from conception to operation. You will lead the efforts of external partners operating as an extension of the Verrus team in the development of these designs. Finally, you will provide key input to Verrus’ technology roadmap, conceiving new ideas, and promoting internal adoption of relevant developments in our industry space.

This is a full-time, individual contributor position reporting to the CTO. The role will be based out of Verrus’ Bay Area office, with requirements for some potential light travel.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and review electrical schematics, drawings, and specifications for HV and MV electrical systems for data centers, including switchgear, transformers, distribution panels, and protection systems.
  • Perform / oversee detailed power system studies, including load flow analysis, short circuit analysis, and protective device coordination studies.
  • Develop and review plans, and coordinate with contractors for the installation, testing, and commissioning of HV and MV electrical equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., NEC, IEEE, NFPA 70E).
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and advancements in power systems engineering, assess the relevancy to Verrus products, and advocate internally for adoption.
  • Own power system issues throughout the project lifecycle, including concept design, detailed design, procurement, bidding, manufacturing, delivery, and on-site installation. Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders to identify and resolve issues.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • 10+ years experience in the design, construction, and operation of electrical systems, focusing on mission-critical infrastructure (data centers, hospitals, etc.).
  • 5+ years of experience managing cross-functional projects with multiple stakeholders, ensuring alignment and successful execution.
  • Extensive experience with HV and MV power systems, including switchgear, transformers, distribution panels, and protection systems.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical codes and standards (e.g., NEC, IEEE, NFPA 70E).
  • Adaptability to work in a rapidly changing, fast-paced environment and picking up new technical areas of expertise.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Preferred qualifications

  • Master's or Ph. D. degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 15+ years experience in the design, construction, and operation of electrical systems, focusing on mission-critical infrastructure (data centers, hospitals, etc.).
  • Experience with large scale micro-grid or grid-connected projects
  • Working knowledge of mechanical and control systems.
