WIRE HARNESS DESIGN ENGINEER
Bascom HunterGlendale, AZ, United States- Full-time
Bascom Hunter's Power and Controls Division is seeking a Wire Harness Design Engineer to support the design, development, and validation of electrical wiring and interconnect systems for aerospace and defense applications. This role focuses on the creation of robust, manufacturable wire harness solutions and serves as a key technical contributor supporting system integration from early concept through production.
The successful candidate will work closely with electrical, mechanical, systems, and manufacturing engineers to design and release wiring harnesses that meet electrical performance, environmental, EMI/EMC, and regulatory requirements. This role is primarily an individual contributor position with opportunities to mentor junior engineers and influence design best practices.
Project & Technical Execution
- Execute wire harness design tasks through the full product development lifecycle: requirements definition, design, routing, documentation, and production release.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (mechanical, thermal, systems, manufacturing) to ensure proper system-level integration of wiring and interconnects.
- Support program schedules and milestones by delivering accurate, timely harness design outputs.
- Interface with suppliers and manufacturing partners on connector systems, wire, shielding, and harness fabrication details.
- Design electrical wire harnesses and interconnect systems for aerospace and defense products.
- Create and maintain 2D schematics, wiring diagrams, and 3D harness layouts using SolidWorks Electrical and associated MCAD tools.
- Perform component selection for connectors, contacts, backshells, wire types, shielding, and protective materials.
- Develop manufacturing deliverables including BOMs, wire run lists, flattened harness drawings, and installation documentation.
- Apply EMI/EMC mitigation techniques, grounding, bonding, and shielding best practices.
- Ensure harness designs meet routing, bend radius, clearance, thermal, and serviceability requirements.
- Optimize designs for size, weight, reliability, and manufacturability (SWaP considerations).
- Generate and maintain technical documentation including schematics, wiring diagrams, interface control documents, and drawing packages.
- Support requirements development, tracking, and traceability for wiring and interconnect systems.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable aerospace and defense standards such as AS50881, IPC/WHMA-A-620, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, and DO-160.
- Participate in design reviews (PDR, CDR, TRR) and support configuration control and change management.
- Support qualification, certification, and customer reviews related to wiring and interconnect systems.
- Support first article builds, production transition, and incorporation of manufacturing feedback.
- Assist with troubleshooting wiring and harness-related issues during integration and test.
- Support environmental, EMI/EMC, and system-level testing activities as they relate to wiring and interconnect performance.
- Contribute to root-cause analysis and design improvements based on test and field feedback.
- Manage BOMs and coordinate procurement activities during alpha system development phases.
- Work with vendors to support procurement, inspection, and acceptance of turnkey wire harness assemblies for manufacturing.
- U.S. Citizen
- Technical degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, or a related technical discipline with 10+ years of experience in wire harness or electrical interconnect design OR
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field with 3-6 years of experience in wire harness or electrical interconnect design.
- Strong understanding of wire sizing, insulation systems, connector systems, shielding, grounding, and bonding techniques.
- Experience producing manufacturing-ready harness documentation including drawings, BOMs, wire run lists, and installation details.
- Demonstrated experience designing for manufacturability (DFM), including ease of assembly, installation access, serviceability, repeatability, and reduction of build errors.
- Familiarity with aerospace or other high-reliability product development environments.
- Proficiency with engineering documentation tools and Microsoft Office.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Hands-on experience with SolidWorks Electrical for schematics and/or 3D harness routing.
- Experience with aerospace and defense standards such as AS50881, IPC/WHMA-A-620, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, or DO-160.
- Experience with additional ECAD/MCAD tools (Zuken E3, Capital, CATIA, NX, Creo).
- Knowledge of EWIS principles and aerospace wiring installation practices.
- Strong design-for-manufacturing (DFM) experience, including collaboration with wire shops and manufacturing teams to resolve build issues, incorporate feedback, and improve first-pass yield.
