Director Of Student Conduct And Safety

The Director of Student Conduct and Safety is a key district leader responsible for establishing consistent systems, expectations, and practices for student conduct, school safety, emergency preparedness, and alternative programming across all EVSC schools. Reporting to the Chief Officer of School Culture, this position supports schools in creating safe, supportive, and productive learning environments that prioritize both accountability and student success. The Director provides leadership and support to principals, assistant principals, and district leaders related to student discipline, restorative practices, crisis response, and student transitions to and from alternative educational placements. This position also leads districtwide school safety efforts, coordinates emergency preparedness systems, oversees student expulsion proceedings, and collaborates closely with district departments and community partners to ensure safe and effective school operations.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate and support district behavioral threat assessment practices, including training, multidisciplinary team processes, intervention planning, and response protocols for student safety concerns.
  • Ensure schools maintain updated safety plans, emergency procedures, and crisis response protocols.
  • Coordinate and support districtwide safety drills, emergency preparedness training, and crisis response planning.
  • Work collaboratively with the EVSC Chief of Police, Director of Behavioral Support, building leaders, Chief Administrative Officers, and other district leaders to ensure schools are prepared to respond effectively to emergencies and safety concerns.
  • Support school administrators during safety incidents and emergency situations.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal school safety requirements and reporting expectations.
  • Coordinate the District Safety Team.
  • Ensure communication with students, families, schools, and community partners is clear, timely, professional, and supportive.
  • Provide bi-monthly reports for the Superintendent, Chief Administrative Officers, and Administrator/Principal PLCs regarding trends and essential data related to: Discipline; Expulsions; Safety concerns and incidents.
  • Oversee management, updates, revisions, and implementation support related to the Code of Student Conduct and discipline matrix and Student Rules document.
  • Analyze district-wide behavior and safety data to identify trends and support continuous improvement.
  • Provide district leadership and oversight of all student expulsion proceedings.
  • Serve as the district Expulsion Examiner for conduct and expulsion meetings.
  • Conduct investigations related to student disciplinary incidents that elevate to the district level and communicate with appropriate staff, families, schools, and agencies as needed.
  • Facilitate return-to-school, contract, support, and review meetings for expelled students.
  • Establish district norms and expectations for student removal from school settings and readiness for return from alternative placements while partnering with Chief Administrative Officers to ensure alignment in decision-making.
  • Provide guidance and support to schools regarding student behavior and discipline matters that do not rise to the level of expulsion.
  • Ensure disciplinary procedures are implemented consistently, fairly, and in alignment with Board policy, state law, and district expectations.
  • Lead and coordinate the Vanderburgh County Safety Commission.
  • Make regular school visits to audit safety matters including active supervision.
  • Attend School Staff meetings to offer regular safety training.

Qualification requirements include:

  • Master's degree required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful school leadership experience required, including experience as an assistant principal or principal.
  • Experience with student discipline, restorative practices, school safety, crisis response, and/or alternative education preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of student discipline laws, due process requirements, school safety regulations, and student support systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead difficult conversations and navigate complex student situations with professionalism and sound judgment.
  • Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, staff, community partners, and district leaders.
  • Valid Indiana administrator license required.

Leadership development and school support includes:

  • Establish and facilitate regular meetings with building administrators to provide professional development, training, resources, and coaching related to student conduct, restorative practices, disciplinary responses, de-escalation, documentation, and due process.
  • Help develop the leadership skills essential to the role of Assistant Principal and Dean.
  • Conduct regular school visits to: Observe staff-student interactions and adult responses to student behavior; Coach and support building administrators; Monitor implementation of behavior response strategies.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Behavioral Support on implementation of districtwide behavior systems and supports.
