Job Summary

UC San Francisco is seeking an Associate Director of the Office of Sustainability that is passionate about making lasting environmental improvements in a public sector higher education research, learning and health institution. The ideal candidate will have knowledge in a breadth of sustainability practices including but not limited to climate change and resiliency measures, zero waste, green built environs, sustainable procurement, clean energy and efficiency strategies, environmental justice, green health practices and communications. The Associate Director will implement strategies and manage the program, project, and reporting responsibilities of the Office of Sustainability and the day-to-day business of the Office including supervising staff and interns and consultants; support and participate in numerous UCSF and UC working groups and committees; provide internal consultancy to campus and health departments, promoting cross-collaborations; facilitate Office communications and outreach efforts; manage collection, analysis and annual reporting of sustainability data; and, develop new initiatives and plans to advance sustainability and climate action. Proven experience in green building and landscape practices / certifications, operational best practices in sustainability in the health and health sciences, green labs / operations, office management, and data science skills are welcome competencies. The position reports to the Chief Sustainability Officer and Executive Director.

This position is required to be on-site; minimal hybrid work arrangements may be considered (expectation for in-office 4 days a week).

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $94,400- $201,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Office of Sustainability is a department in the division of Campus Life Services. The Office of Sustainability has responsibility for stewardship of the UCSF operational and administrative environment to ensure a healthier and more sustainable community locally and worldwide. The Office work enables zero-carbon operations with a focus on clean energy, water conservation, land stewardship and greening the built environs, efficient transportation, smart resource use and waste reduction, sustainable procurement, green health practices, and inspiring inclusive institutional change. Efforts are guided by the UC Sustainable Practices Policy and related UCSF policy, MOU's, guidelines and emerging priorities. The UC Sustainable Practices Policy applies to the 10 UC campuses, five academic health centers and other university facilities in thirteen areas of sustainable practice

UCSF is the only UC campus devoted exclusively to health sciences, with professional degree programs in dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy, as well as interdisciplinary graduate programs and numerous postdoctoral programs. UCSF includes over 10 million square feet of space including buildings for hospitals, clinics, research, education, and administration located at multiple urban sites throughout San Francisco, Oakland, and Fresno. Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and / or equivalent experience / training in environmental science, management, or policy; architecture; engineering; or public health
  • Minimum of 5-8 years experience or combination of education / related types of experience implementing environmental / sustainability initiatives
  • Advanced knowledge in the area of environmental sustainability management policies, issues and initiatives
  • Advanced knowledge of sustainability rating systems and protocols / 3rd party rating systems such as but not limited to U.S. Green Building Council certifications including LEED, sustainable infrastructure frameworks such as Envision, collection / rating systems for sustainable health such as Practice GreenHealth
  • Advanced knowledge of sustainability policies and procedures in the areas of design and construction; purchasing; contracts, grants and gift processing; building codes, and regulations
  • Advanced skill in coordinating, staffing and leading cost-effective sustainability focused programs
  • Proven ability to foster collaboration across diverse constituencies in a large organization
  • Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Advanced ability to organize information, extract relevant data, and prepare reports in various formats
  • Highly proficient in all software applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Access) and database applications
  • Advanced ability to create clear, concise correspondence, presentations and business documents
  • Ability to lead, engage and motivate groups to meet common objectives

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD preferred
  • LEED, ISSP, Other Environmental Accredited Professional
