Job description

Who we are looking for :

ASCO is in search of a talented and high-performing Director, News and Editorial Content to lead the development of patient-facing and scientific content (formats could include digital short-and-long form, podcasts, social media, video and others.) If you are passionate about leading editorial strategy, establishing and managing relationships with internal and external partners, and developing meaningful oncology content, then we want to hear from you! Remote candidates welcome or primary location in Alexandria, VA.

Responsibilities

Editorial and News Strategy

  • Design and build a self-contained new bureau to identify, produce, and publish news stories leveraging ASCO’s experts, research, meetings, and scientific journals.
  • Define and ensure compliance with contemporary journalistic standards, including accuracy, timeliness, readability and search engine optimization writing techniques.
  • Oversee a team of content developers who function as reporters, including making assignments, supporting and reviewing their work, building editorial skills, etc.
  • Partner with IT to create and maintain effective information systems to facilitate maximum operation of the News Bureau.
  • In advance of ASCO’s scientific meetings (approximately 5 to 6 per year), work with volunteer patient information editorial committee and ASCO’s scientific media relations team to identify research for promotion to media and patients.
  • Lead development of scientific and patient lay summaries for selected meeting research and manage approval process.
  • Serve as staff lead supporting ASCO’s member-driven patient information editorial committee / board.
  • Ensure compliance with ASCO’s volunteer management governance processes. Plan and execute volunteer meetings 2 to 3 times per year. Obtain post-meeting feedback; summarize and manage next steps.

ACS Collaboration

  • Manage content collaboration opportunities and deliverables with American Cancer Society (ACS), including overseeing the development and integration of content to support cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship, as well as integrating standing online medical content including on 80+ cancer types.
  • Build and implement processes to ensure ASCO writers identify news stories that support the partnership with ACS, including alignment with their objectives and editorial calendar, while also highlighting ASCO’s science and experts.
  • Build processes to obtain regular feedback from collaborators; build trust with all key stakeholders and ACS partners, and ensure team delivers high quality work on time.
  • Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English or related field
  • 10 - 12 years of professional experience in journalism, including in healthcare journalism.
  • 4 years of staff management experience
  • Experience in client service (e.g., through agency, in-house role, content development, etc.).
  • Experience producing content for a variety of channels, including long-form journalism, videos, podcasts, etc.
  • Experience leading critical functional or cross-functional initiatives
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed to support business needs
  • Preferred Education and Experience

  • Scientific journalism experience (managing and / or writing)
  • Experience in oncology content
  • Competencies

  • Excellent journalism skills, including interviewing, source identification and ability to write and / or edit breaking news
  • Ability to assess the scientific value of research and content, and ability to develop reports for Board of Directors and senior leaders
  • Ability to constantly find ways to improve the process and results of the editorial team
  • Strong collaboration skills with ability to work in a team environment with physicians, executives, contractors, and other staff
  • Superior communication skills, including editorial skills such as editing and proofreading
  • Excellent writing skills and proficiency in Associated Press Style with ability to translate high science for general audiences
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and project management / planning skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple complex stakeholders and projects within budget and timelines
  • Strong strategic planning skills with ability to drive the implementation of a client service mindset and skills, including planning processes and metrics, to support the collaboration
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with external experts, editors, and all professional levels
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to delegate, motivate and develop staff
  • Ability to determine goals and priorities and to assess the actions, time and resources needed to achieve those goals
  • ADA / Physical Requirements

    Extended periods seated or standing at a desk.

    High use of computer and other office technology equipment.

    Travel

    15-20 days / yr including possible international travel
