About IntelliServ (an NOV company)
IntelliServ develops high-reliability downhole technology - including Wired Drill Pipe systems that enable high-speed data transmission from downhole to the surface. We're building and expanding our R&D capability in Provo, and we're looking for a hands-on technician who enjoys building, testing, troubleshooting, and documenting electronics used in demanding real-word environments.
Role Summary
This position is split approximately 50/50 between:
- R&D Lab Technician support (prototype builds, rapid iteration, new test setup/execution), and
- Sustaining support (repeatable builds/tests, troubleshooting, documentation, continuous improvement of existing hardware and processes).
You'll work closely with Electrical Engineers and cross-functional partners to keep prototypes moving quickly while also improving stability and repeatability for released products.
Key Responsibilities
R&D Lab Support (approx. 50%)
- Assemble and rework electronic prototypes (through-hole and SMT support as needed)
- Build prototype cables/harnesses, fixtures, and simple tools to support engineering development
- Set up test equipment, execute test plans, capture data, and summarize results
- Troubleshoot electronics and help isolate root cause issues with engineers
Sustaining Support (approx. 50%)
- Execute sustaining tests and verification activities for existing products
- Support failure investigation and corrective actions (re-test, reproduce issues, document findings)
- Create, follow, and improve work instructions, build travelers, checklists, and test procedures
- Produce clear test reports and documentation that others can reproduce and follow
Lab Operations / Equipment Readiness
- Perform high-quality soldering and rework/repair
- Use standard lab tools DMMs, oscilloscopes, power supplies, and signal sources
- Maintain lab test equipment readiness and organization (check-out/check-in tracking, labeling, calibration-status coordination, and basic upkeep)
- Maintain good lab practices (ESB handling, organization, build quality, traceability)
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years hands-on electronics technician experience (engineering lab, R&D, sustaining, or equivalent)
- Strong soldering and rework skills with attention to workmanship
- Solid electronics fundamentals (comfortable explaining basic component behavior - diodes, resistors, capacitors,
- Proficient with oscilloscopes and DMMs
- Ability to read schematics, follow wiring diagrams, and build to documented procedures
- Strong documentation skills (test notes, procedures, and reports)
Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)
- Experience with Altium Designer (we can train), including creating/maintaining library components/footprints
- Experience building or maintaining test fixtures (wiring, connectors, basic mechanical assembly)
- Ability to troubleshoot complex issues, execute repeatable tests, and manage controlled engineering documentation
- Comfort working in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift between prototype speed and sustaining discipline
What Success Looks Like
- You can independently build, rework, and verify assemblies with minimal supervision
- You execute tests reliably and document results clearly
- You improve speed and quality by refining fixtures, work instructions, and repeatability
- You can switch gears between prototype iteration and sustaining rigor without dropping details
