To provide instruction, training, and mentoring to students in the theory and practice of electrical systems, wiring, motors, controls, and safety in a CTE/trade school context. The instructor guides students to become competent in residential, commercial, and industrial electrical work.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Plan, prepare, and deliver classroom, laboratory, and hands-on instruction in electrical theory, wiring, circuitry, motor controls, National Electrical Code (NEC), blueprint reading, conduit bending, and safety practices.
Assess, evaluate, and monitor student progress; provide feedback, remedial help, and support.
Develop and update curriculum, instructional materials, and course outlines in consultation with other CTE instructors and administration.
Maintain workshop, lab, tools, equipment, and ensure compliance with safety regulations and code standards.
Manage inventory of electrical components, tools, and materials used in instruction.
Supervise students during lab/shop work and enforce safety and equipment use protocols.
Collaborate with business/industry partners to align instruction with current industry standards and workforce needs.
Serve on school and district committees, participate in professional development, and attend required meetings and trainings.
Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the role of a CTE instructor in the school system.
Qualifications / Requirements
Education: A high school diploma or equivalency, at least four years of full-time, relevant work experience (with one year in the last 5 years), and a current state or national license of industry-based credential.
Licensure / Certification: Valid electrician's license or journeyman/master electrician certification is a strong plus.
Experience: Several years (e.g., 4+ years) practical experience in electrical installation, maintenance, or repair, preferably in residential, commercial, or industrial settings.
Prior teaching or training experience in a technical / vocational setting is preferred.
Knowledge of NEC (National Electrical Code), electrical safety, motor controls, wiring, conduit, transformers, Blueprints, etc.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills.
Ability to adapt instruction to students with varying levels of background and ability.
Commitment to ongoing professional development and industry updates.
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
Work in a lab/shop environment with exposure to electrical equipment, tools, and materials.
Must adhere to safety protocols, wear protective gear, and enforce safe practices.
Periodic lifting of tools, equipment, wiring, materials.
Occasional need to work evenings or provide extra lab/shop sessions depending on course schedules.
