Summary
The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) Electrocardiograph (EKG) monitors the cardiac rhythm and rate of both medical and cardiac patients from a remote location using sophisticated diagnostic cardiac electrocardiography equipment. Monitors the health status of each telemetry patient, receive and interpret requests for diagnostic procedures. The MIT records, interprets, and documents the electrical activity and status of each patient and alerts the RN staff for any abnormalities or aberrancies.
Duties

- The incumbent will be assigned to the central telemetry monitoring unit working a rotating tour of duty.
- Responsibilities include cardiac monitoring and direct and indirect patient care for an adult and / or geriatric male / female patient population.
- Provides continuous monitoring of cardiac rate, rhythm, and patterns of conduction at a central monitoring station for telemetry patients within the Acute Care Service nursing units including the Emergency Department.
- Interprets and documents cardiac rhythm strips in the patient record for telemetry patients within the Acute Care Service nursing units, including the Emergency Department, every eight (8) hours and PRN (as needed).
- Responsible for the completion of timely, accurate and thorough documentation related to cardiac rhythm interpretation as well as computer data input into electronic health record of all information gathered to formulate a permanent record of rhythm tracing.
- Performs appropriate communication to maintain identification and location of patients and telemetry transmitter on admission, discharge, patient moves, and procedures.
- Maintains cleanliness of the station equipment & maintains adequate levels of supplies for performance of duties.
- Completes routine rounds on the shift to replace leads & batteries as needed. Evaluates the equipment is intact, clean, functional, and safe for use.
- Understands patient's conditions & medical treatment sufficiently enough to observe, report, and record changes in the condition of the patient's cardiac rhythm status.
Work Schedule : 7 : 30 AM - 8 PM with weekend rotation

Pay : Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off : 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
Parental Leave : After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy : After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66 . Retirement : Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Preferred Experience : Preferred candidate will have one year of cardiac telemetry technician experience. BLS and ACLS required. National Heart Association (NHA) Certified Electrocardiograph is accepted & Certified Rhythm Analysis Technician (C-RAT) is preferred for the full performance level by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

Basic Requirements :
Grade Determinations : In addition to the basic requirements for employment, candidates must meet the following grade-determining criteria for placement at grade levels specified
Electrocardiograph Technicians (EKG) operate instruments used to record electrocardiograms and analyze cardiac rhythms. Certification is offered by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT).
GS-6
Experience . At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
1. Ability to recognize special patient needs such as disabilities, impaired mobility, and complicating medical conditions in order to prepare and position the patient for the prescribed procedure.
2. Knowledge of the specialized equipment and accessories appropriate to cardiac monitoring and ability to perform such tests.
3. Knowledge of universal precautions and sterilization techniques and ability to follow CDC guidelines in cleaning equipment.
4. Ability to monitor the patient for adverse reactions and take appropriate action.
5. Ability to operate the equipment to perform standard and routine highly specialized procedures including cardiac rhythm analysis.
GS7
Experience : At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the equipment, standard tests and procedures, and typical readings including arrhythmias and abnormalities.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
1. Knowledge of typical patient reactions & signs of distress including the ability torecognize, report and treat potentially lethal rhythms.
2. Knowledge of the specialized equipment & accessories and settings appropriate to cardiac monitoring & ability to correct common errors and perform corrective measures.
3. Acts as a mentor / preceptor to lower grade technicians.
4. Ability to modify procedures / positions to obtain the correct results with patients with complicated / complex conditions such as amputations, Parkinson's disease, structural defects, and scar tissue.
5. Knowledge of universal precautions and sterilization techniques & ability to follow CDC guidelines in cleaning equipment.
6. Ability to monitor the patient for adverse reactions & take appropriate action.
7. Provides in-service training on telemetry room equipment and related instrumentation.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 7. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS 6 to GS 7.
Physical Requirements : This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative / invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. The MIT must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. These physical requirements will be consistent with VA Directive Handbook 5019.
