Job Description Summary

The Z. Smith Reynolds Library seeks a library and archives professional to serve as the Collections Archivist for the Special Collections & Archives of the Z. Smith Reynolds Library. The successful candidate will provide leadership in the management of the Department’s collections and oversee and coordinate their accessioning, arrangement, description, and access in all formats under the supervision of the Director.

This is a full-time, twelve-month Librarian position with Library Faculty status. The Collections Archivist will report to the Director of Special Collections & Archives and be a member of the Special Collections & Archives Team, one of six teams in the library. ZSR Library faculty are governed by the policies established in our Librarian’s Assembly and this position will be evaluated annually on Librarianship (70%), Scholarship and Professional Achievement (20%), and University or Professional Service (10%).

Selection preference will be given to candidates with the ability to review, accession, appraise, process, and arrange archival materials and create finding aids and other descriptive metadata for the department's collections according to professional standards and guidelines. They will also directly and indirectly supervise others conducting this work, including ZSR faculty (Processing Archivist), staff, students, and volunteers. This position will require onsite work and occasional travel.

Job Description : QUALIFICATIONS :

Required Qualifications :

Candidates must possess a Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or a master’s degree in a related field with experience in archives, special, or research library setting.

Four or more years of archival experience in processing physical and digital collections in an archives or special collections environment;

Ability to supervise and train others, and work collaboratively;

Demonstrated mastery in the use and application of EAD, DACS, DCRM (MSS), MARC, LCNAF, LCSH, RDA and other library and archival descriptive and content standards.

Demonstrated skills in project management in a team environment, including the ability to track and measure progress toward project goals and complete projects within anticipated deadlines.

Familiarity with basic preservation of archival materials, including proper handling, housing, and storage.

Excellent communication, research and writing skills.

Preferred Qualifications :

Experience enhancing and transforming metadata for archival collections, including manipulating data to integrate unstructured and / or legacy information with standardized descriptions and repurposing metadata for reuse.

Demonstrated mastery of XML schemas and the use of XML editors, and facility in the manipulation of metadata across systems and platforms.

Strategic thinker with the ability to envision innovative archival applications for users.

Salary and Rank : Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. We anticipate hiring at the Associate Librarian rank. Minimum starting salary for an Associate Librarian is $65,000 annually plus a generous benefits package.
