Job Overview
The Reference Librarian provides extensive reference service to the Law Center's faculty and students by participating in the reference desk rotation, conducting individual research consultations, writing research guides, and participating in other law library instructional programs as needed.
The Reference Librarian participates in basic and advanced legal research instruction, Legal Research and Writing liaison program, journal liaison program, faculty liaison program, library tours, and other educational programs.
The Reference Librarian evaluates and selects materials for the library's collection in assigned subject areas.
Complexity of Work : Semi-complex : Requires some integration of different but relatively similar bodies of knowledge and / or functions. Some analytical ability required.
Freedom of Action : Very General Supervision : Resolves most questions, accomplishes most tasks without guidance. Physical Working Condition : Office environment; light lifting (less than 20 lbs.) required.
Impact : Librarian instruction directly supports the curriculum of the Law School. Student and faculty requests for research and materials must be carried out accurately and expeditiously. Failure to do so could negatively affect the effectiveness of classroom teaching, student learning, or the accuracy of scholarly publications authored and lectures presented by our faculty. Timely, accurate information delivered to faculty or students is vital to the accuracy of briefs or other court documents, the validity of litigation, mediation and other procedures involving our faculty and students, particularly students in clinical programs. Consequently, the failure to provide accurate, timely information could negatively affect the overall reputation of our faculty and ultimately the law school.
Work Interactions
Student Activity : Shared responsibility with other librarians for research assistance at the reference desk. At this time the reference desk handles approximately 4,000 reference questions each year. Meets with students on a regular basis to provide individualized research advice and instruction.
Teaching Activity : Shared responsibility with other librarians for the formal classroom instruction of approximately 5,000 students. At this time the library offers more than 150 classes each year.
Along with other librarians, this position works directly with students and faculty on a nearly constant basis, and is essential to supporting the research needs of the students and faculty at the Law Center.
Work Mode Designation : This position has been designated as Hybrid 4 . Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. Such review may necessitate a change to a position's mode of work designation. Requirements and Qualifications
Required :
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school or non-U.S. J.D. equivalent.
- Master's degree from an ALA-accredited school of library and / or information studies or non-U.S. Master's degree equivalent.
- Knowledge of both legal and interdisciplinary research sources and methods, including international, foreign, and comparative law.
- Experience with legal research materials, including online legal databases.
- Current awareness of new technologies and library trends in legal research and instructional programs.
- Excellent communication skills.
Preferred :
Pay Range : $54,616.00 - $100,493.33 Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
