Job description

Reference Librarian, Law Library, Georgetown University

Georgetown University comprises two unique campuses in the nation's capital. With the Hilltop Campus located in the heart of the historic Georgetown neighborhood, and the Capitol Campus, just minutes from the U.S. Capitol and U.S. Supreme Court, Georgetown University offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, and unparalleled opportunities to engage with Washington, D.C. Our community is a close-knit group of remarkable individuals driven by intellectual inquiry, a commitment to social justice, and a shared dedication to making a difference in the world.

Job Overview

The Reference Librarian provides extensive reference service to the Law Center's faculty and students by participating in the reference desk rotation, conducting individual research consultations, writing research guides, and participating in other law library instructional programs as needed.

The Reference Librarian participates in basic and advanced legal research instruction, Legal Research and Writing liaison program, journal liaison program, faculty liaison program, library tours, and other educational programs.

The Reference Librarian evaluates and selects materials for the library's collection in assigned subject areas.

Complexity of Work : Semi-complex : Requires some integration of different but relatively similar bodies of knowledge and / or functions. Some analytical ability required.

Freedom of Action : Very General Supervision : Resolves most questions, accomplishes most tasks without guidance. Physical Working Condition : Office environment; light lifting (less than 20 lbs.) required.

Impact : Librarian instruction directly supports the curriculum of the Law School. Student and faculty requests for research and materials must be carried out accurately and expeditiously. Failure to do so could negatively affect the effectiveness of classroom teaching, student learning, or the accuracy of scholarly publications authored and lectures presented by our faculty. Timely, accurate information delivered to faculty or students is vital to the accuracy of briefs or other court documents, the validity of litigation, mediation and other procedures involving our faculty and students, particularly students in clinical programs. Consequently, the failure to provide accurate, timely information could negatively affect the overall reputation of our faculty and ultimately the law school.

Work Interactions

Student Activity : Shared responsibility with other librarians for research assistance at the reference desk. At this time the reference desk handles approximately 4,000 reference questions each year. Meets with students on a regular basis to provide individualized research advice and instruction.

Teaching Activity : Shared responsibility with other librarians for the formal classroom instruction of approximately 5,000 students. At this time the library offers more than 150 classes each year.

Along with other librarians, this position works directly with students and faculty on a nearly constant basis, and is essential to supporting the research needs of the students and faculty at the Law Center.

Work Mode Designation : This position has been designated as Hybrid 4 . Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. Such review may necessitate a change to a position's mode of work designation. Complete details about Georgetown University's mode of work designations for staff positions can be found on the Department of Human Resources website.
