Position Summary
UBMD Ophthalmology / Ross Eye Institute is seeking a motivated and patient-focused Medical Assistant/Technician to support clinical operations across our ophthalmology practices. No prior experience is required—this role offers hands-on, on-the-job training for individuals interested in starting or growing a career in eye care. The Medical Assistant supports physicians by preparing patients for exams, performing vision testing, assisting with procedures, and maintaining a safe, efficient clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Patient Support

Prepare patients for physician visits, including medical history, preliminary exams, and vision testing

Perform routine ophthalmic testing such as visual acuity, refraction, visual field testing, pachymetry, A-scan biometry, and contact lens evaluations

Assist physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures

Administer ophthalmic medications as directed

Counsel patients on physician instructions, medications, drops, contact lenses, and ordered imaging
Clinical Operations & Equipment

Prepare exam and treatment rooms and maintain appropriate stock levels

Set up and assist with minor OR procedures, maintaining sterile fields and instrument sterilization

Clean, maintain, and troubleshoot ophthalmic equipment; report issues as needed

Process prescription refill requests
Documentation, Quality & Safety

Accurately document patient information, testing, and procedures in the electronic medical record (EMR)
-
Maintain confidentiality and safeguard patient information
-
Adhere to established clinical protocols, safety standards, and regulatory requirements
-
Perform patient work-ups within established timeframes while maintaining excellent customer service
Flexibility & Coverage
-
Float to alternate Ross Eye Institute locations as needed

Support a variety of ophthalmology subspecialties, from pediatrics to adult clinics
Qualifications
-
High school diploma or GED required
-
Prior medical or ophthalmology experience preferred, but willing to train the right candidate

Proficiency with computers and electronic medical record systems

Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team

Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism
