Job Duties
The incumbent for this position performs wildlife management practices and infrastructure maintenance on Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) in Region 1 with primary focus on properties within the Big Rivers work unit (mostly Charles City and New Kent counties). Chiefly responsible for the management of Chickahominy WMA and routinely supports management of Ware Creek and Guinea Marsh WMAs. Assists Lands and Access Manager in completing wildlife work to meet Agency program goals and objectives. When necessary, supervises a crew to manage and develop wildlife habitat, maintain or construct facilities and collect biological information. Assists the boating access manager (BAM) with the maintenance and inspection of boating access facilities, as needed. Maintains equipment and inventory of assigned equipment, prepares reports of activities, and maintains a log of work accomplishments. Guidance and direction are generally provided with objectives and timelines for completion dates. The methods for accomplishments are generally the employee's responsibility.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful incumbent would have the following minimum qualifications.
- Working knowledge of principles and practices of wildlife habitat management and land stewardship.
- Working knowledge of heavy equipment operation, transportation, and maintenance; use of hand and power tools; and the ability to operate watercraft.
- Working knowledge of the fundamentals of building repair, construction, and maintenance.
- Working knowledge of the principles and practice of prescribed fire.
- Ability to understand and apply wildlife regulations; to implement field tasks associated with wildlife management and research projects with minimal supervision; and perform manual labor in varying climatic conditions.
- Ability to comprehend policy and to follow procedures and prepare written reports.
- Recordkeeping, strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Skill using a personal computer with related software.
- Possession of, or eligibility for, a valid Virginia driver's license.
Additional Considerations
If the successful candidate is not currently living in the area, an option for free, short-term housing (up to six months) on a local WMA will be made available.
