Job Summary :
Our Unit Manager for the Leak Prevention Unit in the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Section is responsible for managing the operating functions of the unit. The unit manages a variety of leak prevention activities including non-corrective action programs, suspected release investigation, UST closure reports, and service provider certifications. You will be responsible for supervising up to eight staff members including assigning work, setting priorities, monitoring and evaluating performance, and also developing and providing training for your team. You will participate in community involvement relations and oversee non-corrective action programs such as the Tank Site Improvement Program. You will attend meetings with other supervisory / managerial staff to give and receive information and to participate in discussion, problem resolution and decision-making.
All ADEQ management positions champion continuous improvement projects within the unit and recommend and implement programs or operational improvements; assists in the development of goals and strategies; develop policies and procedures related to environmental inspections, enforcement, compliance and / or scientific studies; and manage the most complex or high profile projects or assignments.
This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) :
Knowledge of : the principles and practices of environmental control, as applied to the identification, monitoring, and regulation of pollution sources; Federal and State statutes and agency regulations, policies and procedures governing the identification, testing, monitoring, and regulation of pollution within the State; administrative methods and procedures used in managing resources and personnel assigned to a large environmental control program area; the functions and capabilities of all programs and equipment assigned to the program area.
Ability to : manage, coordinate and direct the resources of a multi-unit environmental control program; develop environmental control program policies and goals; analyze environmental control program needs and establish appropriate program priorities; establish and maintain work relationships with subordinate staff, agency managers, other governmental officials, officials in the regulated business / industrial community and the public to resolve environmental control related issues / problems; communicate verbally and in writing; evaluate technical environmental control data to ensure completeness and accuracy.
Selective Preference(s) :
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental management, environmental or chemical engineering, geology, biology, hydrology, or other environmental discipline
- 3-5 years of environmental experience in a regulatory agency, consulting, or private industry
- 2+ years of supervisory experience
- Comprehensive knowledge of UST state / federal rules and statutes, the non-corrective action financial assistance programs offered by ADEQ and release investigation and confirmation practices; knowledge of or the ability to learn state and federal environmental compliance and enforcement protocols and their interpretations
