Job description

Environmental Engineer

Allonnia's purpose is the pursuit of imaginative solutions to solve the world's toughest waste challenges through biology. Allonnia is leveraging the power of biotechnology and engineered systems to degrade or sequester pollutants and upcycle waste. Our ethos at Allonnia is to work in harmony with nature, combining biology and technology to fast-forward time and bring Nature's future solutions to the present day. Through this collaboration, we will unlock the potential in waste and enable a world where nothing is wasted.

Mission of the Position

The mission of the Environmental Engineer is to help drive new technology adoption in the market, including customizing it to specific market applications. This hands-on engineer would serve as Allonnia's subject matter expert on field installation, startup and commissioning, system design support, technology capabilities, and performance expectations for foam fractionation systems and new remediation products in a variety of media and applications. The overall scope of this role will enable our newest engineer to have an opportunity to become an expert on foam fractionation for PFAS removal and cutting edge technologies that will address some of the most challenging environmental contaminants that threaten human and ecological health.

Responsibilities & Measurable Accountabilities

Deploy new technology in the field

  • Interface and build partnerships with customers and collaborators as the SME for pilot and full-scale implementation of PFAS foam fractionation systems and new remediation products (in situ and ex-situ)
  • Perform hands-on fieldwork; example tasks could include calibrating float switches, dismantling and cleaning a blower impeller, troubleshooting process interlocks, specialized drilling and injection oversight
  • Assist with the design and documentation of site-specific deployment approaches and cost estimates
  • Oversee (remote or on-site) product application of PFAS foam fractionation systems and new remediation products (in situ or ex-situ) on time and under budget
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to achieve customer success in the field
  • Travel for field deployments sometimes for multiple weeks at a time; average split between field and office expected to be about 30 / 70.

Project reporting, process improvement, and data analysis

  • Document site / project descriptions including lessons learned and deployment protocols thoroughly and in a timely manner
  • Contribute consistently to the technical knowledge management system
  • Continual identification and documentation of opportunities to improve deployment processes
  • Contribute to project reports for customers and partners
  • Compile and assist with the interpretation of project data
  • Commissioning and field support (remote and on-site)

  • Collaborate with manufacturer and O&M subcontractors through commissioning, troubleshooting and routine O&M, including completion of manufacturer warranty obligations
  • Help coordinate unit mob / demob, and maintenance schedule including site access and site personnel notices
  • Comply with all site-specific health and safety requirements and environmental regulations
  • Support the business development team in the sales cycle with technical expertise and value articulation

  • Support in the development of quantified value propositions that communicate the value of the technology
  • Deliver customer-friendly presentations outlining the system's technical capabilities
  • Support proposal efforts including scope, cost, and schedule for system installation and O&M
  • Supporting the launch of new products, including tradeshow participation
  • Key Criteria / Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or advanced degree in engineering; F.E. preferred, P.E. a plus
  • 2+ years of relevant environmental remediation system experience including environmental field work and hands-on experience maintaining and troubleshooting ex-situ and / or in-situ remediation systems
  • Experience in project and task management including coordinating shipments, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Experience with emerging contaminants including PFAS and 1,4-Dioxane strongly preferred
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility, travel, and work independently with minimal supervision
  • High aptitude for working with mechanical systems
  • Effective organization / analytical skills; experience writing detailed technical proposals and reports
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment. Must be capable of managing multiple projects that are deadline-oriented, handle interruptions, and be flexible with changing tasks
  • The integrity to maintain and promote high social, ethical, and organizational standards in all matters
  • Experience with software tools such as AutoCAD, MS Project or equivalent, MS Office, GIS
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
  • Boston preferred
