General Description of Duties
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
This is highly skilled work in the maintenance and repair of primarily heavy / construction equipment in Fleet Management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Repairs County's fleet. Work involves, but is not limited to, suspension and front end repairs exclusive of alignment; repairing heavy and other construction equipment; repairing miscellaneous equipment; and assisting equipment mechanics as requested.
Maintains Leon County Fleet. Work involves, but is not limited to maintaining cars and light vehicles; diagnosis of drive ability problems; trouble shooting as required, and air conditioning maintenance.
Makes computer / journal entries.
Cleans service vehicles and shop area.
Prepares accident reports when needed.
OTHER IMPORTANT OR MARGINAL DUTIES
Procures parts, materials, and supplies.
Consults with manufacturers and vendors; and acquires special apparatus from vendors.
Supervises community service workers and wash / steam cleans equipment to be repaired.
DIFFICULTY
Tasks involve the application of standard practices and considerable judgement in determining work methods in order to accomplish desired results.

Duties range from somewhat defined to generally defined. Guidance is sought when cost exceeds established guidelines and when instructions are contrary to needed repairs.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACT
Internal customer contact limited to internal staff and vendors.
EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS USED
Employee uses computer and office equipment, various handheld tools to repair and maintain equipment. Employee is required to operate a variety of light to heavy automotive equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is performed in a garage. The employee is exposed to dirt, grease, moving parts, fumes, inclement weather, and slippery surfaces. Effort is exerted regularly and involves a considerable amount of walking, standing, lifting, pushing, reaching, and stooping.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of gas and diesel engines and methods for maintaining and repairing various automotive and heavy equipment.
Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Skill in the use of pertinent tools and equipment.
Ability to repair light, heavy, and miscellaneous equipment.
Ability to perform field and road service.
Ability to read and understand maintenance manuals for all equipment maintained and repaired.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to follow and interpret oral and written instructions.
Ability to lift more than 50 pounds.
Ability to operate various maintenance tools and vehicles.
Ability to maintain and repair light, heavy and miscellaneous equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A high school diploma or an equivalent and four years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements :
Must possess or be able to obtain within 30 days of employment a State of Florida CDL Class "A" license for operating any combination of vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more provided the GVWR of the Vehicle(s) being towed is more than 10,000 pounds. This license is required because the position will transport heavy equipment.
An ASE certification is preferred.
Selection Guidelines :
Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview and reference check, and drug testing.
Automatic Progression :
To help address career mobility and retention efforts, automatic progression from an Equipment Mechanic to a Sr. Equipment Mechanic may apply. At the discretion of the Director - Fleet Management, employees assigned to the Equipment Mechanic class may be promoted to the Sr. Equipment Mechanic classification based on performance. When vacancies occur, employees may be hired as either an Equipment Mechanic or a Sr. Equipment Mechanic.
FLSA STATUS :
Position is Non-exempt. Analysis : The purpose of this position is to perform highly skilled manual work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, construction, and other equipment in Fleet Management.
