Job description

Water Distribution Operator

This requisition expires on November 10, 2025, but may close earlier if the position is filled prior to the expiration date. Responsible for use of and operation of complex, motorized heavy equipment for the maintenance, repair, and construction of the water distribution system Citywide. Act as the first-line supervisor in their absence.

Essential Functions and Other Important Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. DUTIES

  • Assist supervisor in planning and scheduling the work of assigned staff.
  • Operate equipment, perform water distribution operator duties, and monitor maintenance work and equipment operations in the field.
  • Perform on-the-spot training and coaching regarding the best and safest methods of accomplishing tasks.
  • Inspect crew work activities to ensure appropriate and timely completion of maintenance and repairs in a safe manner; address unsafe practices, as appropriate, and notify leadership immediately of the situation.
  • Review, prepare and ensure accuracy for reports, and workorders.
  • Transport heavy equipment and materials to and from job site, as necessary.
  • Issue tools and materials, as necessary
  • May conduct simple-to-moderate research to resolve internal and external stakeholder concerns.

SUPERVISORY / BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff; recommend assignment / assignment change.

    Job Requirements

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent; and,
  • Three (3) years' experience in maintenance work and in operating heavy equipment; and,
  • Two (2) years supervisory experience; and,
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tank Vehicle endorsement or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment; and
  • Must have or obtain a valid TCEQ Class B Water Distribution License from within thirty-six (36) months of employment; and
  • Must have or obtain a valid TCEQ Class III Wastewater Collections Operator License from within thirty-six (36) months of employment; and
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Class "C" Water Distribution License or equivalent,
  • OR

  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.
  • REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, as well as City of Denton policies and procedures.
  • Skill in identifying moderate problems and implement solutions.
  • Skill at a beginner level, working with Microsoft Office 365, and other software systems to complete work.
  • Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience.
  • Ability to lead and motivate others.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing work environment to facilitate / accomplish needed activities.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand GIS Mapping, water and wastewater plans for construction, utility plans and equipment operation manuals.
  • Ability to document all adjustments necessary and approved to complete the project.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow safety protocols and safe work procedures.
  • CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tank Vehicle endorsement and a good driving record OR must possess a valid Class C driver's license with a good driving record and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL with Tank Vehicle endorsement within six (6) months of employment
  • Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification.
  • Must possess or obtain a valid TCEQ Class B Water Distribution License from within thirty-six (36) months of employment
  • Must possess and obtain a valid TCEQ Class III Wastewater Collections Operator License from within thirty-six (36) months of employment
  • Must pass a physical examination.
  • Must be able to work overtime when requested
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that could include nights and weekends
  • Must attend and successfully complete the City's Defensive Driving Course (DDC) as soon as possible after employment (if required to drive City vehicle or personal vehicle for City business)
  • Environmental Factors and Conditions / Physical Requirements

    SAFETY

  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment; ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing; operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions in the work area and / or any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Safety Sensitive (Subject to random drug testing) : Yes.
  • Tools / Equipment Used : Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals; standard field equipment, include but are not limited to, personnel protective equipment (PPE), backhoe, trackhoe, front-end loader, boring machines, and hydraulic breakdown tools.
  • Posture : Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing / pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion : Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
  • Lifting : Moderate heavy lifting no more than 100 pounds and carrying up to 50 pounds).
  • Environment : Works outside with exposure to increment weather, noise, debris, odor, and rough terrain; occasionally requires irregular and / or prolonged hours.
  • Travel : Travels to City of Denton buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • Attendance : Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position. Must be able to work overtime, respond to after hour emergencies and lead staff, as necessary.
