The Federal Litigation Attorney will manage a diverse federal litigation docket, including substantial legal writing and research in matters pending in multiple U.S. District Courts, the U.S. Courts of Appeals, and, when appropriate, petitions for writ of certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court. This role requires excellent analytical judgment, high-volume drafting, and disciplined deadline management.

SALARY RANGE : $_____ to $_____ (DOE)

Responsibilities :

  • Manage and advance federal litigation matters from inception through resolution, including case strategy, factual development, and client counseling.
  • Draft and revise high-quality federal pleadings and papers, including complaints, amended complaints, motions, oppositions, replies, declarations, requests for judicial notice, and proposed orders.
  • Conduct rigorous legal research and analysis involving federal statutes, regulations, and constitutional issues, including application of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, local rules, judges' procedures, and standing orders.
  • Prepare appellate briefing and related submissions, including notices of appeal, excerpts of record / appendices coordination, opening / answering / reply briefs, and relevant motions practice in the Courts of Appeals.
  • Assist with (and, as appropriate, lead) Supreme Court-related work, including research and drafting in support of petitions for writ of certiorari and merits-stage briefing when applicable.
  • Oversee and participate in discovery practice, including drafting and responding to written discovery, coordinating collection / production, and preparing discovery-related motions when needed.
  • Coordinate filings in CM / ECF and related systems; ensure strict compliance with formatting, procedural rules, and deadlines across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Communicate professionally and timely with courts, clients, opposing counsel, and internal team members; provide clear status updates and next-step recommendations.
  • Collaborate with paralegals and support staff to maintain organized case files (paper and electronic) and to ensure accurate calendaring and deadline tracking.
  • Assist with hearing and trial preparation as needed, including witness / exhibit organization and briefing support.

Required Skills / Abilities :

  • Exceptional legal writing ability with demonstrated experience producing polished, persuasive briefing on short deadlines.
  • Strong research skills, including comfort with complex federal questions and multi-jurisdictional procedural issues.
  • Working knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure, and local rules; ability to quickly learn judge-specific practices.
  • Excellent verbal communication, professionalism, and client-service orientation.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and proven ability to manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Gsuite, and legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw / Lexis); familiarity with PACER / CM / ECF.
  • Education and Experience :

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California (or ability to become admitted promptly, if applicable).
  • 2+ years of federal litigation experience strongly preferred; appellate experience strongly preferred.
  • Immigration-related federal litigation experience is a plus, but not required if the candidate has strong federal writing and research experience.
  • For immediate consideration, please send your resume (and, if available, a writing sample) to hrdept@goldbergimmigration.com.
