Job description
Tagged: Field Engineer, Structural

A well-established specialty contractor with 25+ years of success in structural steel and mechanical erection is looking for a Field Engineer / Field Specialist to support project execution across job sites in the Southeast. This company works on meaningful commercial and industrial projects and has built a reputation for technical precision and safety. If you're a field-oriented engineer or technician who likes being where the work happens — solving layout problems, keeping documentation tight, and making sure crews have everything they need to install right the first time — this role was built for you.

  • Anticipate $65,000–$80,000+ base, depending on experience
  • Full suite of benefits, PTO/Vacation
  • Travel expenses: Hotel and per diem covered when traveling
  • Travel: Up to 50% regional travel across southern states; home on weekends
  • Location: Florida-based; ideally Fort Lauderdale to Orlando/Tampa corridor

Role:

  • Interpret structural, mechanical, civil, and architectural drawings in the field
  • Perform field measurements, layout, and elevation/line control using laser level, total station, and tape verification
  • Confirm tolerances, placement accuracy, anchor bolt patterns, centerlines, and equipment alignment
  • Develop daily and weekly work plans with the Superintendent and Foreman
  • Identify material, tool, equipment, and access needs ahead of installation
  • Assist with crane/lift planning, rigging requirements, and sequencing
  • Initiate, track, and close RFIs, submittals, and field clarifications
  • Maintain weld maps, bolt torque logs, pressure test records, and material traceability
  • Support inspection activities with GC, owner, and third-party inspectors
  • Update redlines and as-built drawings for project turnover
  • Serve as the day-to-day technical point of contact between the PM, superintendent/foreman, fabricators, vendors, and inspectors
  • Support Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), pre-task plans, toolbox talks, and safety audits

Preferred Experience/Skills:

  • Associate's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering/Technology preferred; equivalent field experience considered in lieu of formal education
  • Previous experience in structural steel, millwrighting, ironworking, equipment setting, carpentry, or concrete anchoring
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently
  • Strong understanding of tolerances, alignment, and installation methods
  • Proficiency with field layout tools: laser level, total station, digital measuring
  • Basic familiarity with weld types, bolt/flange connections, rigging practices, and steel erection processes
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Bluebeam, Procore, or similar project software
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Willing and able to travel up to 50% regionally; home on weekends; all travel expenses covered
