Job description

Audit Consultant

The Audit Consultant plays a critical role in ensuring premium accuracy, financial integrity, and client accountability across Sun Life's Group Benefits business. This role conducts premium audits, analyzes census and billing data, identifies premium discrepancies, calculates financial impacts, and partners directly with clients and internal business partners to resolve premium variances.

With a focus on both self-administered and list-billed, this role supports Employer Benefits, Stop Loss, Supplemental Health, and National Account clients as assigned.

What you will do:

  • Analyze census, billing, eligibility, contract, and premium remittance data to validate that premium paid aligns to policy provisions and rating methodologies.
  • Use contract and premium calculation knowledge to explain audit outcomes, resolve questions, and help clients, brokers, and TPAs improve the accuracy of future premium remittance.
  • Investigate premium discrepancies, calculation issues, monthly variance or flux items, and document findings clearly for internal review and client communication.
  • Recreate premium calculations and validate premium statement creation for Self-Bill API clients to identify client misunderstandings or plan design set up disconnects.
  • Review and support approval processes for high dollar refunds and revenue adjustments.
  • Collaborate with Premium Administration, Billing, Underwriting, Client Services, Finance, offshore partners, Technology, Reporting, IT, and other cross-functional teams to research issues, coordinate membership updates, refine analytical reporting, and strengthen controls.
  • Use Excel, reporting tools, and large data sets to analyze premium activity, monitor inventory, identify recurring root causes, summarize outcomes, and support audit readiness.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying reporting gaps, automation opportunities, process defects, and client education needs that improve accuracy, efficiency, and client experience.
  • Support company initiatives, special projects, and evolving audit priorities as assigned.

What you will bring with you:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, Mathematics, or related field preferred; equivalent insurance or premium administration experience may be considered.
  • 1 to 3+ years of experience in accounting, audit, financial analysis, billing, premium administration, or insurance operations preferred.
  • Knowledge of Group Benefits, Stop Loss, Supplemental Health, or related insurance products preferred.
  • Client-centered mindset with proven ability to collaborate effectively with peers, clients, brokers, and cross-functional partners through email, phone or chat.
  • Strong analytical and financial investigation skills, including ability to combine information from policy, census, payroll, eligibility, billing, and payment sources.
  • Advanced Excel proficiency, including pivot tables, lookups, formulas, data validation, and comfort working with large data sets; Power Query or similar data transformation experience preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization and ability to document conclusions clearly.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to explain complex financial findings in plain language.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and follow through on complex investigations within expected timelines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement, problem solving, learning, and positive team collaboration.
