The University of North Carolina at Chapel HillChapel Hill, NC, USThis position functions at a contributing-level Fire Safety Professional. This position supports the University’s Fire Safety Program as a Fire Inspector. The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate the University fire extinguisher program; conduct required review and inspections of buildings in an assigned zone of campus to ensure compliance with applicable local, state and federal codes and regulations; respond to fires, technical rescue incidents and hazardous materials incidents on campus; and work with faculty, staff, students and other stakeholders to ensure the safety of the campus community. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Four year degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science / engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require specific certifications or licenses. Specific jobs will require additional minimum training and / or licensing upon selection. Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, biological science, environmental science / engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology, or related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Experience in firefighting, fire inspection, technical rescue, and / or hazardous materials response is highly desirable. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, biological science, environmental science, occupational safety, industrial technology, fire science or related discipline or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred that incumbent have experience in at least two of these disciplines. Required Licenses / Certifications Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. Must hold the following North Carolina certifications, be eligible for reciprocity, or have the ability to obtain within one year of hire :
- Fire Inspector I.
- Technical Rescuer-General with Confined Space.
- Hazardous Materials Technician (ProBoard, IFSAC, OSHA -hour, OSHA -hour certifications accepted). Special Physical / Mental Requirements This position requires physical agility stoop, crawl, climb ladders / stairs, move / transport heavy equipment, etc). Entry into hazardous environments, use of personal protective equipment, and an element of personal risk during emergency responses. The ability to wear a respirator (cartridge, air purifying or open-circuit SCBA) is essential. Annual medical clearance is required for Emergency Response Team.
