The list established by this recruitment may be used to fill future full-time, part-time, limited term, and temporary vacancies for up to one year.THE DEPARTMENTThe Vallejo Fire Department consists of 90 employees, who are staffed between Administration, Suppression, Training, and Fire Prevention divisions. The Department averages over 18,500 calls per year and boasts two of the more active engine companies in the state. Fire Suppression Division Fire Suppression consists of 78 Firefighter-Paramedics, Engineers, Captains, and Battalion Chiefs. The staff are spread across three different shifts and seven stations to ensure City coverage to citizens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each shift is led by a Battalion Chief. Training DivisionThe Training Division is responsible for providing continuous training and education to internal members; overseeing the Department's three-year Apprenticeship program, running the Apprentice Recruit Academy, and managing the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) section. Training staff consists of one Battalion Chief and one Fire Captain. Fire Prevention DivisionThe Fire Prevention Division is responsible for safety inspections, plan checks and permitting, fire reports and investigations, weed abatement, and public education and outreach. Vallejo is also home to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, one of America's only combination wildlife, oceanarium and theme parks.THE POSITIONThe Vallejo Fire Department is actively seeking highly motivated persons who have successfully been placed on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center Statewide Eligibility List (FCTC) and who possess a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification, and a valid Cal-JAC Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Card, an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certificate, a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certificate or Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professional (PEPP) Certificate, a Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) Certificate or Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) Certificate or International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) Certificate. The ideal candidates will have a desire to actively support our commitment to providing a high level of service to our community through innovation, training, and cutting edge technology, and may already have a valid EMT-Paramedic License. Recruits will undergo a fire training academy and receive additional departmental training designed to provide an overview of the fire service in various regulations and procedures, firefighter techniques, and other related duties. During the academy, recruits will be assigned to a 40 / hour work week schedule. Upon completion, academy graduates will transition to a 56.3 / hour work week.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSFirefighters / Paramedics receive paramedic specialty pay on top of base salary of Firefighter for their possession of required certifications and licenses.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives supervision from supervisory or management staff. EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and / or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following : Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating and salvage work.Performs clean up and overhaul work and checking, testing and maintenance activities on apparatus and equipment to return it to readiness for further alarms.Assists in maintaining fire apparatus and equipment and fire station and grounds.Responds to emergency calls.Operates resuscitators and inhalators and administers first aid.Drives equipment to fire scenes and assumes responsibility for readiness of firefighting

in making residential, commercial and industrial inspections to discover and eliminate potential fire hazards, to educate the public in fire prevention and to be prepared for fire suppression tactics.Participates in a continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.If qualified, may act as relief Fire Captain or Firefighter Engineer as assigned.Responds to major alarms while off duty.May be required to work irregular hours, to stand by for calls, and to be quartered overnight at a fire

QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of : Principles, practices, and procedures of paramedic-level emergency medical care.Applicable state and local laws, codes, regulations, and policies pertaining to paramedic-level emergency medical care.Elementary physics, chemistry, and mechanics.Ability to : Learn technical firefighting principles and techniques and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression.Learn the City's geography and local area, location of hydrants, mains, and major fire hazards.Learn Fire Department policies and procedures.Act quickly and calmly in emergency
