Under the direct or indirect supervision of a Pathologist, the Pathologists' Assistant performs surgical specimen dissection and post-mortem examinations. This is a full time, salaried, position providing coverage at several hospitals in Connecticut. Relocation assistance is available.
Duties and Responsibilities : 1. Performs gross examination, dissection, tissue selection and dictation for a range ofspecimen types, from biopsies through complex cancer resections.2. Performs tissue selection, cryostat sectioning, and staining of frozen section specimens3. Obtains specimens for ancillary testing (microbiology, toxicology, flow cytometry,cytogenetics) as directed by the Pathologist.4. Assures appropriate specimen accessioning and obtains clinical history, laboratory dataand radiographs when indicated.5. Performs photography (both gross and microscopic) as needed.6. Uses the CoPath Smart LIS appropriately for specimen tracking and accessioning.7. Is able to work independently and uphold professional standards of conduct regardingprotection of patient confidentiality and respect for coworkers.8. Adheres to all laboratory and hospital policies and procedures including compliance,HIPAA, OSHA, and state and accreditation guidelines.9. Assures proper maintenance of equipment and cleanliness of the gross rooms.10. Eviscerates, dissects, and submits sections from autopsy cases with the assistance of apathologist and diener service.11. Additional duties may be assigned by the Medical director or designated Pathologist.12. Willingness to commute and adapt to different hospital settings, depending on System-wide needs.
Physical Requirements :
- Walking, standing, bending, sitting for prolonged periods of time.
- Frequently works with blood, body fluids and tissues with possible exposure to infectious disease.
- Manual dexterity required for most duties as described above.
