JOB OVERVIEW

The Accountant is a member of the Accounting Team with a focus on billing, accounts payable (AP), inventory, and cost of goods sold (COGS), and will oversee the financial management of construction projects. This includes ensuring accurate billing, managing AP processes, tracking inventory, and calculating COGS. The role involves working closely with project managers, vendors, and the accounting team to maintain financial accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. You will be integral in maintaining job costing, managing inventory flow, and ensuring billings are timely, all costs are entered for job costing, and assist PM in tracking job budgets.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Billing and Accounts Payable Management

  • Billing : Manage and oversee the billing process for construction projects, ensuring client invoices are accurate and timely

Calculate and review progress billings, retention, and change orders based on contract terms and project milestones

  • Ensure compliance with billing terms and project budgets, ensuring proper revenue recognition
  • Coordinate with project managers to review project status, ensuring that invoices reflect actual work performed.
  • Accounts Payable : Oversee the processing of vendor and subcontractor invoices related to construction projects
  • Review, approve, and process invoices, ensuring they are accurately coded and compliant with contracts

  • Maintain AP aging reports, ensuring timely payments to vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors
  • Resolve discrepancies between vendors, project managers, and internal teams to ensure accurate invoicing and payment
  • Inventory and Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) Management

  • Inventory Management : Track inventory related to construction projects, including raw materials, tools, and equipment
  • Record inventory movements and ensure accurate valuation of inventory on hand

  • Monitor inventory levels and report on any discrepancies, suggesting actions for replenishment or adjustments
  • Coordinate with the procurement team to ensure the inventory is aligned with project needs and budgets
  • Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) : Manage and allocate COGS for construction materials, labor, and subcontractor expenses
  • Ensure accurate job costing by allocating labor, materials, and overhead to specific projects

  • Track and report project costs, comparing actuals to budgeted costs and providing explanations for variances
  • Assist in calculating and recording COGS for materials used in each project and ensuring proper inventory valuation
  • Maintain proper records of inventory used in the construction process, ensuring accurate COGS reporting in financial statements
  • Job Costing & Project Financials

  • Oversee and manage job costing systems, ensuring accurate tracking of direct costs (materials, labor, equipment) and indirect costs (overhead) for each project
  • Work with project managers to ensure financials align with project progress and scope
  • Review and report on variances between actual costs and budgeted estimates, identifying potential cost overruns and recommending corrective actions
  • Generate reports for senior management to assess project profitability, including cost analysis and margin performance, as well as others upon request
  • Financial Reporting & Reconciliation

  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring accurate reporting of project costs, inventory, AP, and COGS
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts related to AP, inventory, and job costing, resolving any discrepancies
  • Prepare and maintain supporting documentation for audits, ensuring transparency and compliance with accounting standards
  • Contract & Compliance Management

  • Ensure proper accounting and compliance with construction contracts, including billing terms, payment schedules, and change orders
  • Review and ensure compliance with tax regulations, including sales tax and use tax on materials, and proper accounting for COGS and inventory
  • Assist in the preparation and review of contracts to ensure financial terms align with project financials
  • Coordination with Project Managers and Vendors

  • Provide financial insights to project managers regarding project budgets, cash flow, and cost controls
  • Work closely with procurement teams and vendors to ensure accurate invoicing, proper material purchasing, and correct inventory handling
  • Facilitate communication between project managers, vendors, and finance teams to resolve issues related to billing, payments, and inventory
  • ESSENTIAL SKILLS, ABILITIES, EDUCATION

    Job Specific Skills

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, including job costing, AP, billing, inventory, and COGS (construction experience a plus)
  • Proficiency in accounting software (experience with Intacct, Sage, and / or Procore a plus)
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and financial formulas)
  • In-depth knowledge of AP and billing processes specific to construction projects preferred
  • Experience with inventory management and tracking in a project-based environment preferred

  • Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Experience in lieu of education will be considered
  • 2-5+ years of experience in accounting, with at least 2-3 years in construction accounting (preferred), specifically in billing, AP, inventory, and COGS
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Hybrid schedule - 3 days remote, 1 day in Denver office, 1 day in Boulder office
  • May occasionally involve extended hours during peak times such as month-end, quarter-end, or project deadlines
