Taylorsville High School – JROTC Army Instructor (1.0 FTE)

This position is for a JROTC Instructor at Taylorsville High School for the 2024-2025 school year.

Primary Purpose :

Military service instructor to secondary level cadets, responsible for assisting the Senior Army Instructor (SAI), for implementing the policies and procedures for the high school JROTC program according to national, state, and district standards. Primary drill and leadership instructor for mentoring, and motivating cadets and in promoting academic achievement, social, civic, character education, leadership and physical growth. Responsible for assisting in managing and implementing the military service’s national education curriculum and program requirements; advise and assist in plans, coordination, and supervision of all co-curricular service learning, special activities or events (military ball, drill meets, marksmanship matches, honor guards, orienteering, and other extracurricular activities). Promote school and community service events. Assist in property management and fund raising for the unit. Assists in administering the automated cadet record system and reporting for military and district information.

Qualifications :

  • Retired Army Non-Commissioned Officer (E-6 up to CSM), Warrant Officer (W-2 up, W-4) with a minimum of 20 years military service.
  • Not retired from military service longer than 3 years.
  • Meet current height and weight standards as outlined in Cadet Command Regulation 145-2, dated FEB 2012.
  • Possess Army Federal JROTC instructor certification. Associates or Baccalaureate degree preferred.
  • Military Education level (ANCOC, 1SG Academy, SGM Academy) desired.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and automation technology skills.
  • Wear the Army uniform and meet personal grooming standards as outlined in Army Regulation 670-1.
  • Demonstrated troop level experience (company level, battalion, brigade) and staff experience.
  • Completion of secondary education teaching certification requirements for the program as established by the Secretary of the Army.
  • Ability to obtain a commercial driving license (CDL) class B with passengers and “S” endorsement.

Major Responsibilities and Duties :

Instruction

  • Assesses and evaluates student progress and growth through formal and informal evaluations procedures. Evaluates student progress and determines materials and strategies to provide for their needs.
  • Coordinates and consolidates lesson plans, curriculum activities, and objectives with other content areas in order to provide for transfer of learning and knowledge.
  • Develop units and other projects to provide for extended interaction and creativity. Instructs 180 hours of military directed subject materials in classroom and laboratory environment. Teach and promote Honors U.S. Military History Elective.
  • Program Management

  • Administer, advise, and appraise extracurricular teams (drill, rifle, physical training, academic challenge, Cyber patriot, orienteering, and marksmanship).
  • Determines and administers cadets who serve in key leadership positions (command and staff).
  • Administers, advises, coordinates, and supervises special activities or events such as the annual military ball, drill meets, and the Final Review awards ceremony.
  • Coordinates, collaborates, and compiles data for data records in the automated cadet database. Manages and submits all reports required by the Army and the district.
  • Student Management

  • Counsels, mentor, and tutor’s cadets as needed.
  • Performs duties as High-Low Ropes instructor at SISD. Performs other duties and weekend duties as assigned.
  • Communication

  • Implements and maintains communication and coordination with the school faculty and staff to promote cadet involvement in school activities, cadet recruitment and retention.
  • Administration

  • Assist in selection of equipment and instructional materials.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Initiate and approve purchase orders and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.
  • Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all campus athletic equipment and maintain a current inventory of all equipment and fixed assets within program.

    Job Summary

    Under the direction of the school principal, the classroom teacher is responsible for creating a positive learning environment where students develop the skills to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, lifelong learners and productive citizens. Teachers maintain a safe environment; establish rapport with students, parents and colleagues; motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for further education and do so in accordance with each student’s ability. Teachers differentiate curriculum and use effective research-based methods of instruction. Implement Proficiency-Based Grading in Student Evaluations.

    Essential Functions

  • Teach the core content area(s) outlined in the USBE’s Core Curriculum, and adopted by the Board of Education, correlated with other approved learning activities.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the child.
  • Utilize effective teaching techniques in translating lesson plans into productive student learning experiences which best utilize the time available for instruction
  • Utilize computers and other technological classroom support equipment in student instruction.
  • Supervision of students requires both indoor and outdoor responsibilities (e.g. recess duty, gymnasium activities, etc.) in all types of weather and air quality.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom through organization and appropriate discipline strategies.
  • Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, maintain appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
  • Be familiar with and willing to implement Proficiency-Based Learning in evaluating students.
  • Be familiar with and willing to implement the Granite Way.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences, telephone calls, e-mails, student planners, school website, and other appropriate means, to discuss the student’s progress.
  • Communicate and cooperate with other professional staff regarding the student’s academic and personal growth areas.
  • Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are essential functions of this position.
  • Create an effective learning environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and interest centers.
  • Provide and maintain a safe and supportive environment in the classroom and on the school campus.

  • Required Training and Education

  • Requires a Utah State Board of Education (USBE) approved cleared criminal background check.

  • Requires a valid Professional Educator License for the State of Utah within the relevant “Licensure Area of Concentration” and if applicable, “Endorsement.”
  • Working Environment

  • Supervision of students requires both indoor and outdoor responsibilities (e.g. recess duty, gymnasium activities, etc.) in all types of weather and air quality.
  • Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
  • Physical Demands

    Requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Ability to reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects. Ability to talk or hear.
