Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION : PRIMARY PURPOSE :

Plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program to the school assigned. Provide and supervise a proactive system of interventions to encourage all students in maximizing personal growth and development. Serve as a leader to coordinate academic information and all counseling services to school assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES :

Program Management

  • Implement a comprehensive school counseling program (CSCP) that conforms to the most recent edition of the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs.
  • Facilitate the continuing evaluation of the CSCP through a campus-based counselor advisory committee.
  • Coordinate with the team to complete the counselor principal plan, year at a glance calendar, timetracker system, and annual report. Create and retain other reports and documents as requested.
  • Oversee college readiness programs to help ensure students obtain a CCMR indicator prior to graduation.
  • With the support of the campus IMPACT counselor, coordinate the campus crisis response as needed.
  • Ensure the CSCP is in alignment with the campus and district improvement plans.
  • Provide the principal with timely feedback on the team’s progress in achieving the program goals.

Campus Counseling Department Management

  • Under the direction of the campus principal, evaluate the campus counselors.
  • Mentor, coach, and train campus counselors, including those that are new to the campus or team.
  • Coordinate duties and responsibilities for the counseling team.
  • Schedule and plan all campus counseling department meetings.
  • Support, plan, and coordinate with representatives of outside partners such as MEF, CIS, and Collin College.
  • Under the supervision of the campus principal, develop and monitor the department budget.
  • Serve on the campus level committees for a variety of functions including the campus leadership team, the campus MTSS team, and the threat assessment and safe and supportive team, as well as other committees as assigned by the campus principal.
  • Employ collaborative decision-making processes that foster and promote collegiality and team building.
  • Advising, Assessment, and Student Services

  • Partner with the associate principal as requested to help design and implement the master schedule.
  • Provide specialized scheduling support to help ensure accurate student placements.
  • Conduct credit check and transcription audits to improve accuracy in student records.
  • Review forms and consult on special advising topics such as automatic admission, early graduation applications, graduation plan requirements, IGCs, eHigh placements, and FHSP graduation applications.
  • Participate in planning and evaluating specific CCMR testing programs, including TSIA.
  • Interpret standardized testing and other student data appropriately.
  • Guidance & Counseling

  • Provide direct instruction or partner with campus staff to ensure students receive instruction in developmentally appropriate TEKS, student competencies as contained in the Texas Model, and other mandated prevention education as required in state and federal code.
  • Provide guidance to individuals and groups of students to develop education and graduation plans based on career awareness and interests.
  • Counsel individuals and small groups as needed.
  • Consultation

  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.
  • Work with school personnel and school district residents to obtain resources for students.
  • Use an effective referral process to help students and others use special programs and services.
  • Provide technical assistance, consultation, and training on counseling topics to student services staff such as 504 coordinators, Special Education Leads, eHigh teachers, and ELL coordinators as needed.
  • Consult with counseling colleagues, the Senior Director of Guidance and Counseling, and the Coordinator of Counseling as requested.
  • Serve as requested on district level committees for a variety of counseling topics such as the APG team and the district counselor advisory committee.

  • Follow attendance policy as assigned by supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :

    Evaluate counselors at assigned school and oversee clerical employee(s) and representatives from partner entities.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Tools / Equipment Used : Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.

    Posture : Frequent sitting and standing; occasional bending / stooping, pushing / pulling, and twisting.

    Motion : Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.

    Lifting : Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)

    Environment : May work prolonged or irregular hours; work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather), exposure to noise; occasional district-wide and statewide travel; ability to transport materials / supplies to be used in presentations and in work sessions with teachers and staff.

    Mental Demands : Ability to work collaboratively with the campus principal; work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); coordinate district functions; ability to problem solve, to work collaboratively with others and to work on multiple projects / tasks within a given period of time.

    Other : work as a team member and with peers, teachers, campus personnel and principals. Professional demeanor, dress, resourcefulness, and communicate effectively with diverse groups and accept supervision. Work without day-to-day supervision. Punctual attendance in the workplace and work-related meetings / activities.

    EVALUATION :

    Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board Policy on Evaluations.

    PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE :

    Three years counseling experience in a secondary school setting

    REQUIREMENTS :

    Education / Certification :

    Master’s degree in guidance counseling

    Valid Texas counseling certificate

    Special Knowledge / Skills :

    Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development

    Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

    Ability to lead other counselors

    Strong organizational communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
