Job description

Position

Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced Program Director for our Renewables and Other Power Program. The Program Director provides strategic leadership and managerial oversight for the department, and reports directly to Global Energy Monitor's Associate Director. The Renewables and Other Power team's research program focuses on producing global facility-level datasets that reflect the current and future utility-scale solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, bioenergy, and nuclear landscapes. The Renewables and other Power Program currently has the following trackers : Global Solar Power Tracker, Global Wind Power Tracker, Global Hydropower Tracker, Global Geothermal Tracker, Global Bioenergy Power Tracker and the Global Nuclear Power Tracker.

The Challenge

According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.

About Global Energy Monitor

Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization's founding in 2007, GEM's research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM's data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM's information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others.

Location

GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role. Remote staff do not have to be based in the United States; however, preference will be given to those living in the United States. GEM can hire employees worldwide in countries where our PEO (Deel) operates, except in countries classified as Level 3 or 4 on the U.S. Department of State's website.

The Program Director will set an inclusive and positive tone, and will promote a respectful and professional work culture, paying particular attention to issues of race, culture, and gender. As an executive leader, the Program Director will set an example of decorum and integrity, displaying the qualities of openness, flexibility, diligence, dedication, efficiency, kindness, fairness, and community mindedness.

The Program Director also holds regular meetings with their team.
  • Publications. The Program Director will coordinate the planning and scheduling of reports and briefings. Together with other key staff and the respective Project Managers, the Program Director will designate a team to manage the scoping, data collection, technical oversight and quality assurance, graphics, writing, editing, copyediting, translation, production, and promotion of each analysis.
  • Partnerships, outreach, and media. The Program Director will develop relationships with partner organizations and represent GEM in the media and in public forums; stay abreast of industry, NGO, media, and related governmental data and reports to assess current and emerging trends.
  • Administration. The Program Director collaborates with appropriate staff and / or departments to maintain and develop the program's websites and social media accounts. In coordination with the Executive Director, the Associate Director, the Human Resources Manager, and the Operations and Finance Director, the Program Director executes miscellaneous administrative responsibilities as needed including maintaining and preparing employee records and organizational expense ledgers, preparing financial statements and budgets, preparing foundation reports, etc.
  • Technology and Data. The Program Director works in collaboration and consultation with the Data Director on the Program's technology and data strategy, expertise, and resources.
